The custodians at Academy School are an essential asset in maintaining the building and supporting a learning environment that promotes health, attitude, and pride in students and staff through a clean and orderly school. In addition to performing daily cleaning duties the custodian provides direct support to classroom teachers in set up and maintenance of classroom furniture and equipment. The school custodian also serves as a role model to students by displaying a professional, courteous, helpful nature. Positive interactions and successful communication with a culturally diverse school community is key to this position.

This position is calendar year, hours are four hours per day and start and end time can be flexible in the afternoon/ evening. Hourly rate range is Wage Grade 3 ($16.81 - $23.21 per hour) based on experience.

Supervision: The custodians will receive day-to-day direction from the school Administrator(s) and specific performance requirements from the Facility Manager. The custodians will operate within district and school policies and procedures, adhere to acceptable custodial standards, Labor and Industry standards, and OSHA standards.

Functions: Sweep, mop, vacuum, scrub, and refinish floors; clean dust and polish furniture; wash windows, walls, doors; clean and sanitize restrooms; dispose of trash; make certain all areas of the building are in clean, sanitary, and in orderly condition according to school/district standards. Pick up litter within the school and on grounds. Assure safety during inclement weather to include shoveling, salting, providing slip protection on wet floors. Applies cleaning chemicals according to manufacturer's label and established safety procedures. Adheres to safety measures for cleaning, lifting, and operating equipment. Performs minor repair and maintenance as authorized by Facility Manager. Performs minor painting to walls, railings, playgrounds and other areas of the school. Keeps all equipment in a good state of repair and cleanliness. Reports to Facility Manager on matters relating to defective mechanical equipment and/or building maintenance. Secures school to ensure proper building security at all times. Lock and secure building at end of shift. Assists in implementing emergency planning and response. Maintains inventory and request supplies and materials needed to accomplish assigned tasks. Observes safety or maintenance issues and addresses them immediately or reports them to Facility Manager or Administration. General computer skills are needed to write/close work reports and other various tasks.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to bend, sit, move about, hear and speak. Noise level may be high when operating power equipment. Employee may be required to work in restricted spaces to include crawling and/or climbing or working at heights. Required to stand, be on feet, and move around for a full work shift. Ability to lift 60 pounds and move heavier materials using appropriate equipment. Ability to work using ladders, scaffolding, and mechanical lifts. Employees are required to properly use safety equipment as is appropriate to the work to prevent injury to self or others. Ability to communicate in person, by radio, electronically and over the phone. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Employee will be trained in CPR, Stop the Bleed, and defibrillator. Other safety based trainings may also be a requirement. While performing the duties of this job the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet, cold, humid, and/or hot conditions. The employee may also be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials or illness during the course of their duties.
