Job Description

• Exercise authority to commit resources of the district in the interest of promoting student success and addressing student needs, as outlined/discussed during IEP development by organizing, conducting and managing IEP evaluation meetings for students, both in-district and out of district.
• Serve as the liaison for students attending out of district placements, case manage students in referral to out of district placements, maintain ongoing collaboration and communication for students in placements.
• Act as a liaison with collaborative, state and private agencies, and private schools for providing services to eligible Wilmington Public Schools students
• Maintain all relevant IEP evaluation statistics and data, and process necessary paperwork as required by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
• The Special Education Team Chairperson will assist in the coordination of, and in some cases, may provide staff development and workshops/training regarding special education issues and support teacher development through consultation and lead department meetings.
• Advise Director of Student Support Services and Coordinator of Special Education Services regarding specific case issues pertaining to services and/or placement.
• Be able to facilitate TEAM meetings in an efficient and empathetic manner and ensure development of high quality, student-centered IEPs.
• Familiarity with Inclusive Practices and their implementation to promote student success
• Ability to develop and maintain positive and collaborative relationships with staff and families by providing open and honest communication.
• Demonstrate an understanding of Special Education Regulations and remain current with necessary updates.
• Support teacher development through consultation and building-based meetings and serves as a resource for the district and school staff regarding Wilmington Special education process, procedures and programs.
• Travel to out of district programs may be required as a component of this position.
• Reports to the Director of Student Support Services and Coordinator of Special Education Services
• Works up to 20 additional days beyond the regular school year, to be scheduled in collaboration with administration.
  • This position is currently a union position. However, effective July 1, 2023 this positon will become an individual contract/administrative (non-union) position.

    Job Requirements
    DEGREE PREFERRED: • Master’s degree in Special Education or related area • Applicants must hold a valid Massachusetts DESE license in Special Education or in a related field. EXPERIENCE PREFERRED: • 2 years of experience in Special Education • Experience as a team chairperson We are interested in candidates who are invested in the achievement, equity, and access of all learners in and beyond the classroom.
