1.00 FTE Student Assistance Program (SAP) Professional for Shelburne Community School (SCS) 5-8

POSITION OBJECTIVES The SCS SAP Professional is a 1.00 FTE position. The SAP Professional is someone who operates on-site and identifies, screens, and assists students experiencing personal stressors that can impede their school performance, and negatively impact their social and emotional well-being. The SAP Professional also provides school-based services to teachers, administrators, state agencies, providers, and communities as well as students.
The SAP Professional supports and empowers students who are dealing with a variety of personal issues such as those related to alcohol and other drugs, depression, anxiety, academic issues, family, and friend stressors. Using a holistic approach to promote a healthy school environment, the SAP Professional works in several ways. They provide a prevention element by educating students in making good decisions about the use and misuse of alcohol and other drugs and also provides an early identification and intervention. This can include referral to offsite providers for assessment and treatment when necessary. It can also involve providing a positive atmosphere for recovery for those students engaged in or returning from substance abuse treatment.
The ideal candidate will:
•Hold a bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Counseling or other appropriate discipline plus relevant experience preferred (or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired). Requires familiarity with substance abuse prevention, intervention, and treatment, and recovery methods. Working knowledge of the fundamentals of emotional, behavioral, and mental health issues of the students served.
•Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate and work cooperatively with a diverse group of individuals, including students, peers, supervisors, parents, and representatives of outside organizations.
•The Student Assistance Program professional (SAP) will be:
-Certified or licensed as an Alcohol and Drug Professional (CADC or LADC)
-Or will hold certifications pertinent to the work of the SAP Professional.
