Job Description
Function: Under the direction of the Principal and Assistant Principal, the Dean of Students will oversee and manage daily student behavior and discipline. The Dean of Students will work collaboratively with administrators, teachers, coaches, parents and student leadership groups to develop and maintain a positive school culture and learning environment for all.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1.Informs students and parents about school and district policies; and collaborates with the Guidance and Office staff to ensure all new students are appropriately welcomed and advised of school expectations
2.Manages student supervision issues, assists staff and parents in developing student behavioral expectations, and enforces school behavioral expectations.
3.Assists teachers with effective classroom management strategies and serves as a resource to staff in dealing with classroom management issues
4.Establishes and communicates progressive discipline policies and a pyramid of interventions to address student behaviors
a.Manages discipline referrals to the office;
b.Assists in the planning, developing and implementing of individual student behavior plans.
c.Reviews Individual Education Plans (IEP) and collaborates with special educators to impact positively student behavior; ensures that all teachers of students with IEPs have knowledge of and implement behavior plans
5.Confers appropriate consequences for behavior with Principal and Assistant Principal
a.Coordinates alternative school placement for students with behavior/discipline issues
•Coordinates in-school suspension
•Coordinates and supervises detention
•Under the supervision of the Assistant Principal, confers out-of-school suspension.
b.Confers consequences to students with school bus discipline referrals
c.Provides mediation for student-student conflicts
6.Assists the Principal and Assistant Principals in developing and implementing school-wide programs to promote positive student behavior, improve attendance as well as arrange for interventions
a.Collaborates with the School Attendance Officer to monitor attendance (absence/tardy), dress code, and reports chronic absent or tardy students to Guidance/Assistant Principal
b.Collaborates with Principal, Assistant Principal, and Guidance staff to coordinate positive alternatives for students
c.Collaborates with staff and families to develop and lead after school support programs
7.Is knowledgeable of
a.State and federal regulations/laws on discipline, and student supervision
b.The related laws of Rhode Island, the Basic Education Program and the policies, regulations and procedures of the Woonsocket Education Department and the Rhode Island Department of Education
c.Principles of effective management, and methods of instruction which enhance student success
d.Effective peer mediation processes
e.Positive behavior intervention strategies
f.Effective classroom management strategies
g.Effective strategies for fostering a positive school culture

This is for the 2022-2023 School Year and is an annual appointment.
This is an interview Position.
Salary is per the WTG CBA.

Job Requirements
Educational Preparation: 1. A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree from an institution approved by the state Board of Education will be required (Master’s Degree preferred) 2. Secondary teaching certificate issued by the State of RI; (Administrative certificate, advanced education and/or experience in administration and supervision preferred) 3. Must have received a rating of Highly Effective or Effective on the RI Innovation Educator Evaluation System and Supports 4. Broad and varied experience as an educator 5. Such alternatives to the above educational requirements as the School Committee may find appropriate and acceptable Experience: 1. A minimum of five (5) years of successful full-time experience as a classroom teacher at the secondary level preferred 2. Extensive knowledge of teaching and learning theories, methods, strategies, curriculum, research and use of instructional technology 3. Excellent human relations and interpersonal skills and an ability to establish a positive rapport with colleagues, administrators, and students 4. Demonstrated teaching and leadership skills, together with written and oral communication skills 5. Evidence of significant professional development and/or experience educating teachers or other adults 6. Counseling/ Coaching experience preferred 7. Must be Crisis Prevention Institute trained or willing to be trained 8. Must be a person of professional and personal integrity 9. Ability to work under pressure, with strict deadlines 10. Public speaking; writing; listening; problem-solving and working with individuals and groups 11. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work 12. Working with parents as partners
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience preferred
