Culturally Appropriate Meals Internship
FOOD & NUTRITION DEPARTMENT

Job Goal: Somerville Public Schools Food and Nutrition Department is seeking a part time, temporary Nutrition Intern to develop a culturally diverse and inclusive menu toolkit.

The internship is an opportunity combining nutrition and technical expertise.

Essential Skills:
•Nutrition Skills: Familiarity with recipe/nutrient analysis programs
•Technical and Functional Expertise: Proficient in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook
•Project Management: Ability to meet deadlines and handle multiple tasks
•Communication Skills: Proficiency in writing and editing
•Thinking Skills: Ability to think creatively
•Interpersonal Skills: Capability to adapt to and work in a team
Responsibilities:
Using Mass Farm to School’s “Serving Up Tradition” as a guide, work with Somerville staff to complete the following tasks:
•Compile Somerville, district, and school level data to understand the cultural backgrounds of families and students in our district.
•Review city and district goals and plans for inclusion.
•Research other districts who have implemented culturally sensitive menus and recipes and write two case studies about their activities.
•Develop a rubric for evaluating our school lunch menu for sensitivity.
•Using products available to Somerville Public Schools through our school food vendors, identify or develop 10 or more recipes to consider for inclusion on the school lunch menu.
•Record recipes in a nutrition information system, including allergens, nutritional information, meal pattern components.
•Develop a monthly menu template that identifies days of cultural sensitivity.
•Final project - Create a Diverse and Inclusive Menu Toolkit for staff to use while developing monthly school food menus and a communication plan to increase awareness of initiatives in the food service department.

Terms of Employment:
•6 Months (2021-2022 school year)
•180 work hours
•$2,500 stipend
