THE 2021-2022 SCHOOL YEAR

SOMERVILLE CENTER FOR ADULT LEARNING EXPERIENCES

Job Goal:
The GOAL Program serves newly-arrived young adults with beginner level English skills. Most students have experienced limited and/or interrupted education in their home countries and meet the criteria for SLIFE. The ELL Teacher will be primarily responsible for raising the reading and writing levels of small groups of newcomer students between the ages of 17-22. Students in the GOAL Program are working toward passing MCAS exams and completing the portfolio-based Adult Diploma Program (ADP). To this end, the ELL Teacher is also responsible for embedding social studies content into their curriculum to provide students with a strong foundation for the ADP. It is essential that the ELL Teacher has had formal training in and successful experience raising reading and writing levels for SLIFE students. The ELL Teacher will work in close collaboration with other ELL teachers, possibly co-teach, and be a resource for the GOAL team.

Responsibilities:
•Prepare and deliver engaging and relevant lessons with measurable objectives that will result in literacy learning gains
•Evaluate and document student progress
•Complete attendance and assessment–related activities
•Work collaboratively with the program administrator, counselor, and teachers at SCALE and Somerville High School
•Participate in GOAL Team and SCALE staff meetings
•Attend SPS staff development activities related to position
•Follow department policy/procedures regarding substitutes and substitute lesson plans

Minimum Qualifications:
••Master’s Degree (in ELL literacy instruction/bilingual education preferred)
•MA Teacher Certification
•Bilingual preferred – Spanish, Creole, or Arabic
•Two years of experience teaching SLIFE students
•Must be a flexible self-starter with a high tolerance for stress and a solutions-oriented mindset
•Experience with computer-based programs and Internet resources
•Basic digital literacy

Physical Demands, Work Environment Requirements:
•Completion of an extensive application packet, including copies of social security card and government issued identification
•Completion of C.O.R.I form
•Completion of the National Fingerprint-based background check in accordance with M.G.L. c. 71, §38G.
•Job requires computer use

Terms of Employment:
•Full time: 8:30 am – 3:30 pm

Since 1974, SCALE has provided classes and support services to more than 1,200 adult learners (16 years and older) annually who need basic reading, writing and math skills, English instruction for non-native speakers, or a high-school credential. SCALE's fully accessible facilities have a computer lab and an on-site HiSET Test Center. ELL and ABE classes are free.
