ANNOUNCEMENT OF A VACANCY FOR THE
2021-2022 SCHOOL YEAR

Assistant Principal of Career, Vocation and Technical Education
SOMERVILLE HIGH SCHOOL

Job Goal: Administer all aspects of the career and technical programs offered through the Career & Technical Education Center (CTE) at Somerville High School and in the Somerville Public Schools.

Qualifications:
•A master's degree from a college or university approved by the School Committee
•A minimum of five (5) years successful teaching and/or administrative experience
•Must hold appropriate DESE licensure; (Vocational Technical Supervisor/Director

Responsibilities:
•Oversee all aspects of CTE programs and services
•Hire, evaluate and supervise CTE teaching and support staff
•Develop and administer a budget for CTE operations
•Coordinate all CTE activities, schedules and programs
•Lead in the development, adoption and implementation of curricula for CTE programs
•Coordinate General and Program Advisory Committee meetings twice per year for all Chapter 74 approved programs and maintain appropriate minutes and records
•Collaborate with the guidance department(s) to provide career planning activities and programs
•Promote CTE programs to all students in the City of Somerville
•Facilitate technology integration, information, communication, and training for students, staff, community and business leaders
•Represent the CTE as a member of appropriate state and regional educational organizations including MAVA – Mass Association of Vocational Administrators, MVA-Mass Vocational Association, SKILLS USA, STAND, Locals 7, 17, 22, 55, 103
•Represent the CTE in the community as a participating member of related organizations such as the Mayor’s Job Council
•Collaborate with post-secondary institutions to coordinate programs, develop articulation agreements, implement dual enrollment opportunities and expand the opportunities for all learners to access expanded learning community-based opportunities
•Serve as a member of the Somerville High School administrative team and provide support and assistance to the other members of the team as needed
•Monitor and evaluate the total career and technical program, provide leadership to achieve the established goals of providing the opportunity for students to prepare for gainful employment/and or college
•Develop annual goals and objectives consistent with and in support of system goals and priorities
•Seek appropriate state and federal fund opportunities to support career and technical education programs in collaboration with District Grants Coordinator
•Conduct annual review of all technical programs, to determine if they provide students with marketable skills to meet local labor market needs in close consultation with the Advisory Committee
•Develop and maintain a capital improvement program
•Recommend equipment purchase, repair, and disposal for all career and technical programs
•Assure the timely collection, review and submission of all forms and reports relative to vocational education to local, state, and federal agencies
•Coordinate community-based work-experience (internship and co-op) programs for all Chapter 74 approved programs with the Director for Community and Work Base Learning
•Plan and direct in-service education for the CTE staff; assist teachers in documenting student competencies through an effective monitoring system
•Supervise career and technical programs to ensure the state Vocational Technical Education Framework learning standards are met
•Enhance the understanding of CTE initiatives and priorities, elicit support and assistance through effective engagement with parents, outside agencies, advisory committees, businesses, government officials and the community at large
•Monitor and evaluate all health and safety standards, including bi-annual review of the vocational/technical health and safety plan including federal OSHA and state Right-to-Know compliance
•Advise and consult with summer school, adult education, Workforce/Community Services Coordinator and other administrators
•In collaboration with District and school-based leaders, plan innovative CTE programs for students attending the Somerville elementary schools, including FAB/LAB, CAD, Electrical and other CTE areas
•In collaboration with the K – 8 Curriculum Coordinator, develop mini-integrated classes with middle school guidance counselors and educators to incorporate interdisciplinary units of study
•Collaborate with the Mayor’s Job Council to develop adult technical institute (day and night model) for the citizens of Somerville in several of the CTE career areas following the council input and data
•Oversee the state-of-the-art FAB/LAB at SHS
•Attend training sessions, conferences and workshops as assigned or appropriate to keep abreast of current practices, programs and legal issues
•Represent the system in a positive and professional manner
•Utilize appropriate strategies and problem solving skills to make decisions regarding planning, utilization of funds, delivering services and evaluation of services provided
•Identify potential problems or opportunities for improvement
•Maintain current knowledge of all pertinent laws and regulations affecting career and technical education
