SUBJECT: English as a Second Language Part Time - Tutor


REPORTS TO: Building Principal and Director of English Language Learners



ESL Tutors are responsible for teaching English as a second language (ESL) to support second language development and literacy acquisition skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) to English Language Learner students in Worcester Public Schools.


1.Responsible for planning, developing and implementing the ESL curriculum, which promote the use of English in social settings, the development of cognitive–academic language skills in English, use of English literacy for academic achievement in the content areas, and the use of English in culturally and socially appropriate ways.

2.Responsible for learning about the English Language Arts curriculum used in the school site(s) and to tailor instruction so that students will be able to participate in the ELA curriculum and other core content areas when not working with the ESL tutor.

3.Qualified as an ACCESS test administrator or willingness to become qualified.

4.Able to prioritize the instruction of English Language Learners in English acquisition as the focus of the ESL tutor position and willingness to contact the Director of English Language Learning Programs if something should interfere with the ESL tutor’s ability to prioritize ESL instruction.

5.Sufficiently familiar with the WIDA English Language Proficiency Standards such that the ESL tutor is able to distinguish between the expected Benchmarks for students at each level of English Acquisition: Entering, Emerging, Developing, Expanding, Bridging and Reaching.

6.Participate in Student support meetings and review meetings, including meetings to identify transitioning students into the Formerly Limited English Proficient (FLEP) designation.

7.Serve as a voice for the Office of English Language Learners at each school site in which the ESL tutor works and to accurately share information the ELL Office requests the ESL tutor to share with the school personnel.

8.Responsible for attending monthly English Language Learner professional development meetings and any required school site meetings.

9.Responsible for completing necessary paperwork regarding the identification, progress monitoring and transitioning of English Language Learners at assigned school(s).

10.Responsible for assuring equal educational opportunity to all individuals regardless of race, color, gender, age, marital status, religion, gender identity, natural origin, sexual orientation, homelessness, or disability.

11.Responsible for monitoring ELL students’ progress to support timely acquisition of English as a Second Language. Also, responsible for providing accurate service delivery reports to the Manager of English Language Learners.


1.Bachelor’s Degree

2.Must hold ESL Teacher License

3.Coursework in second language acquisition, ESL methodology, multicultural education, and assessment of special education students.

4.Ability to provide small groups and/or classroom instruction, including co-teaching with a content area teacher.

5.Ability to Provide ESL services for ELL students with English proficiency levels (EPL) ranging from 1 to 5.

6.Participation in ongoing professional development for ESL instruction on ESL curriculum required.

WORK YEAR: 173 days with flexible scheduling

WORK DAY:19.5 hours per week. Specific schedule to be determined by Director/Principal

SALARY: $28.28 per hour
