Job Description

The Worcester Public Schools is soliciting applications for a Special Education Teacher at Woodland Academy for the 2021-2022 school year. This teaching position is accountable for providing services to students who have been identified with a disability through the team evaluation process. These students are identified as needing systematic instruction throughout their day to address weaknesses across the curriculum. Students are taught compensatory strategies using multi-sensory techniques to enable them to reach their potential and build self-esteem.

Elements of Innovation:
Woodland Academy serves 630 students in grades K-6 and has designed an Innovation Plan in which students and teachers of Woodland Academy will engage in focused, Standards based teaching and learning with the critical goal of increasing student achievement. This effort is supported by a professional learning community, which fosters collaborative learning among and between teacher teams. Woodland Academy’s school wide focus is to ensure students are able to read grade level texts with enjoyment, understanding and engagement across all areas of the curriculum. A systematic approach to time on learning, driven by research based instruction will enable students who require additional supports and interventions to achieve success. Technology has become a critical component of the teaching and learning that takes place each day. Woodland Academy is committed to providing all students and families with a challenging educational experience, in order to maximize individual learning and growth and promote the development of critical thinking skills. Selection Process:
Grade level or specialist team members will have the opportunity to participate in the selection process of candidates. The final decision will be made by the building principal. In order to work as an effective member of the Woodland Academy Professional Learning Community, prospective teachers who are new to the building or in current bid positions must meet the following criteria:
• Demonstrate understanding of and commitment to the mission and vision of the school
• Present and facilitate targeted professional development
• Participate in reflective teaching practices through the creation of lesson studies (included but not limited to audio/visual recordings)
• Embrace Woodland Academy’s professional learning community and positive team based culture
• Participate in demonstration lessons and/or performance assessments as part of the hiring process
• Participate in non-evaluatory peer observation sessions (Lesson Studies) and the subsequent discussion
• Incorporate technology in ways that will enhance and deepen the teaching and learning experiences of staff and students
• All selections will be conducted in accordance with equal opportunity employment standards.

1. Responsible for serving as a member of the Special Education Team in writing educational plans and progress reports on SAGE-IEP, and completing assessments within the required timelines.

2. Responsible for following the student IEP and ensuring compliance with state and federal SPED regulations including the delivery of high quality services, the provision of accommodations/modifications for instruction and assessment.

3. Responsible for remaining up to date with curriculum content and for modifying the curriculum and instruction for students with learning disabilities as identified on their IEPs.

4. Responsible for providing multi-sensory language curricula on a daily basis and support student development of phonological awareness, decoding, fluency, word recognition and comprehension skills in reading acquisition.

5. Responsible for implementing high quality teaching and learning in inclusion and/or LD classes using appropriate differentiated instructional techniques.

6. Responsible for communicating and collaborating with regular education teachers and other personnel in the educational programming for students with learning disabilities.

7. Responsible for understanding the state required guidelines around standardized testing and for providing appropriate accommodations as identified on student IEPs during the administration of these tests.

8. Responsible for assessing student knowledge and academic progress using formal and informal means to develop measurable IEP goals and to support student learning.

9. Responsible for creating and coordinating a schedule of services for students to ensure all IEP requirements are met.

11.Responsible for providing individual, small group, and inclusion instruction aligned with the IEP.

12.Responsible for guiding and supervising paraprofessionals in the instruction/support of students.

13.Responsible for implementing appropriate assistive technologies to support and enhance the students’ communication and learning.

14.Responsible for the promotion of equity and appreciation of diversity to ensure equitable opportunities for student learning in the least restrictive environment.

15.Responsible for attending monthly department meetings and building based meetings/two per month.

16. Responsible for assuring equal educational opportunity to all individuals regardless of race, color, gender, age, marital status, religion, gender identity, national origin, sexual orientation, homelessness, or disability.

17. Performance of other job-related duties as assigned.


1. Massachusetts DESE license in Moderate Disabilities PreK-8
2. SEI Endorsement
3. BA degree
4. A minimum of three years’ successful teaching experience in Special Education
5. Evidence of mastery of a wide variety of teacher competencies, curricula and the understanding of a wide variety of effective instructional models, including multi-sensory, structured language techniques.
6. Excellent written and oral communication skills


1. Massachusetts license in Special Needs 5-12.
2. Demonstrated experience supporting students with severe special needs.
3. Ability to speak Albanian, Arabic, Nepali, Portuguese, Spanish, Vietnamese, or an African Language
4. Experience teaching students who are English language learners
5. Demonstrated experience with second language acquisition.
