Working Group Proposal:
The Calculus Project Curriculum Development

Job Goal: The staff working group will focus on identifying power standards, and an appropriate scope and sequence for the TCP summer program. The group will also identify projects that are closely aligned to these power standards and materials needed to complete them.

This work will help to address unfinished teaching in mathematics that have occurred during the school closure. Based upon grading data, this unfinished teaching will most impact students of color and students from low-income families. By providing appropriate scaffolds, teachers will ensure students have access to new grade-level content, regardless of gaps in teaching and learning and variation in experiences during remote learning.

Black and Latino students have historically been least likely to begin 9th grade at Geometry, thus lacking access to Calculus during high school. Additionally, failure rates for Black and Latino students have risen over the past year. In order to support these students to both access and be successful in Geometry in 9th grade, we will to offer support with the content that students may find most difficult/challenging.

Due to the unique nature of the upcoming summer and the need to accelerate learning for students (national data show that the pace of learning has slowed for many students and that gaps have increased), instruction must look and feel different for students. By teaching new material at and above grade-level, avoiding remediation, and incorporating relevant projects into daily lessons, TCP will maintain student motivation and interest this summer, both of which are keys to learning at an accelerated pace.

Finally, the materials created by the teacher group will clearly outline the scope and sequence for the summer, ensuring clarity among summer teaching staff. The work of the teaching group will provide TCP will curriculum materials that can be used year after year as the program continues to evolve.

Current SPS teachers of middle grades and high school math are encouraged to apply. Curriculum will be developed for Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus.

To review scope and sequence of math content taught to 6-9 grade students during SY20-21; create summer scope and sequence to support student acceleration by identifying content that students are struggling to grasp, content that it is essential to teach/reinforce, and content that students skipped that must be covered this summer
To develop high-level, 4-week lesson plans for each cohort that includes appropriate scaffolds (related prerequisite standards) to ensure access for all students, particularly for those students who may have unfinished math learning over the past 1.5 years due to school closure
To identify topics to be taught over the summer to ensure access to 9th grade Geometry for rising 9th grade TCP students
To develop at least two project-based learning experiences for each cohort of rising 7-11 graders for TCP summer math curriculum, including detailed lesson plans and material lists

Terms of Employment:
•June 18, 2021 - July 2, 2021
•If approved, all educators will receive the contractual hourly rate for completed work. Educators should keep track of the hours they work and complete a “Staff Stipend Payment Request” form. All forms should be submitted to the Assistant Superintendent for approval.
