Extended Learning Program - Teachers

Job Goal:
Extended Learning Program Teacher will oversee the delivery of academic services to support the successful implementation of a distance learning program that will serve Somerville students who are currently excluded from school, or are at high risk of dropping out. The Extended Learning Teacher will collaborate with the Extended Learning Counselor, working under the guidance of a Program Coordinator and in partnership with school and District administrators, and parents/guardians of participating students. Working with school administrators, the Extended Learning Teacher will provide guidance on the academic component of each student’s Individual Learning Plan to support students’ continued progress toward attainment of a high school diploma.

1.Current Teacher Licensure required, Mathematics emphasis preferred;
2.Experience working with high-risk high school student population in a diverse urban environment;
3.Experience working with English Language Learners;
4.Experience working with an online learning platform;
5.Experience conducting outreach to high-risk students and their parents/guardians;
6.Experience developing re-entry programs for students at high risk of dropping out of school;
7.Exceptional organization and time management skills;
8.Excellent oral and written communication skills;
9.Ability to work evenings, weekends and vacations. Some summer work hours expected, but no required on-site time.

1.Work with respective school and District administrators to identify and engage excluded students in grades 9-12 to participate in program.
2.Work with Program Coordinator, Extended Learning Counselor, Full Circle Principal, High School Headmaster and District administrators to develop Individual Learning Plans for participating students.
3.Develop and design the online academic program for the students based on their ILPs.
4.Establish consistent line of communication with students to support their progress through their online academic program as established in their ILP, utilizing the online learning platform and through telephone support as needed.
5.Provide ongoing monitoring and support for students as they progress through courses, including staffing a weekly face-to-face session during after school hours during the school year.
6.Communicate regularly with parents/guardians of participating students regarding student’s progress.
7.Work with Extended Learning Counselor to develop a progress meeting, to be scheduled twice per week, to ensure students stay motivated and are making progress toward ILP goals, and to identify necessary program modifications to academic goals.
8.Coordinate necessary data gathering to support grant reporting requirements.
9.Actively participate in required program staff meetings.
10.Participate in project site visits by Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) staff, as requested.

Terms of Employment:
•Yearly Appointment

•July 1, 2021 thru June 30, 2022 (Hours to be scheduled with the Extended Learning Program Coordinator)

Work Year/Day:
•Position is primarily school year, but summer hours are required in coordination with the Assistant Superintendent and program needs.
•Some school day meeting time will be needed, as determined by student schedules and necessary consultation with school administration and counseling staff.
