Operations & Extended Learning Director
SOMERVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Job Goal: The objective of the Operations & Extended Learning Director is to oversee the operations and extended learning systems of the Somerville Public Schools. The Director assists the Superintendent of Schools substantially and effectively by providing leadership in developing, supporting, communicating, aligning, and maintaining the highest operational standards and extended learning programs. The Director reports to the Superintendent and develops a culture of collaboration between District leadership, municipal officials, afterschool programs, and community organizations in a manner that results in a shared vision and contributes to District success.

Minimum Qualifications:
•Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
•Minimum of five (5) years leadership experience in education, experience working directly with elected officials, superintendents, senior cabinet leaders, school board members, municipal management, non-profits and community representatives, strongly preferred.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
•Experience with municipal or district operations;
•Experience with extended learning programs;
•Demonstrated facilitative leadership and problem solving;
•Excellent communication skills;
•Ability to successfully create and manage stakeholder relationships;
•Excellent analytical skills; ability to utilize disaggregated data for monitoring student progress;
•Experience with organizational leadership and direction in the administrative and educational functions of municipalities or districts;
•Knowledge, experience and ability to utilize administrative and instructional technology tools to enhance core functions and communications.

Responsibilities:
•Oversees and directs a broad range of high-level projects including design, development, coordination and implementation of operational plans, strategic planning, select programs and policies to help attain institutional goals, activities and monitor and evaluate impact and outcomes.
•Brings operations personnel together, develops reasonable courses of action, follows-up on subsequent performance. Ensures effective communication among School District, City officials, community organizations, and personnel.
•Provides leadership and support for all issues and procedures involved with school operations, facilities, and maintenance. Solves problems by prioritizing improvements in existing procedures
•Assists the Superintendent in the general administrative operations of the school district.
•Develops and promotes a shared definition of quality programming among extended learning providers, including afterschool and summer programs.
•Develops and maintains strong relationships with school staff, family liaisons and other community outreach staff to increase access to and increase equity within extended learning programs.
•Supports emergency planning coordination and safety training across SPS extended learning programs.
•Leads the planning of summer programs, to include program offerings, space/facility use, outreach, and development of common administrative reporting practices.
•Participates in key constituent meetings to ensure appropriate and responsive follow-up and accountability and facilitates resolution of important operational matters.
•Attends or participates in required meetings deemed necessary by the Superintendent in order to accomplish the objectives of the position and for professional growth.
•Provides support, feedback and direction for the Superintendent’s executive leadership team.
•Acts as an advocate for the District and ensures that quality supports and services are provided.
•Manages special assignments on a short-term basis and provides effective intervention in complex situations.
•Convenes cross-department working groups as needed to effectively support large-scale operational projects.
•May provide supervision and support to Community Schools, Food Services, and Transportation as needed.
•Other appropriate duties as directed by the Superintendent of Schools, Chief of Staff, and / or the Somerville School Committee.

Terms of Employment:
Full School Year – 260 work days
