Position is ANTICIPATED and CONTINGENT ON 2021-22 SY FUNDING

Class Title: Special Education Teacher (Clinical Support Program- Secondary) FTE: 1.0

General Statement of duties:

The position will include case management for students in grades 9-12 with clinical, social/emotional and behavioral needs. Case management will include, but is not limited to: providing specialized instruction for both academic and functional goals, with an emphasis on social/emotional growth, compliance with all federal and state regulations in special education for the IEP process, evaluations and records, strong collaboration and communication with mental health personnel, general educators and other district support staff, parents, and outside agencies.

Supervision Received:

Receives supervision from the Building Principal and some specific supervision from the Director of Pupil Personnel. This work is subject to review for conformity to policies, rules, practices and instructions.

Supervision Exercised: Day to day oversight of paraprofessionals assigned to the classroom.

Illustrative examples of work performed:

The special educator will:
  • Provide specialized instruction to students grades 9-12 aligned to Common Core and RI Social Emotional Standards for both academic and functional needs
  • Assess student’s academic progress using a variety of tools including curriculum based measurements, student work samples and data collection.
  • Assess student’s functional progress using formal and informal data collection tools
  • Communicate and collaborate with school/district staff, parents, and outside agencies (with a release on file)
  • Work with the IEP team to provide each student’s education in their LRE maximizing opportunities to engage in learning with peers
  • Conduct evaluations for the eligibility/ re-evaluation process
  • Facilitate IEP meetings to create and revise IEPs with students taking an active lead
  • Monitor timelines to remain in compliance with federal and state regulations
  • Case manage all scheduling, services, meetings, paperwork, evaluations, supplementary aids and services and communications to be in compliance with the student’s IEP
  • Coordinate, schedule and train paraprofessionals with supportive supervision
  • Collaborate with related service providers to schedule services, monitor progress and integrate strategies throughout the student’s day

    Knowledge, skills and capabilities:
  • Use of an Asset based team approach and strong collaboration with mental health professionals, general education and district staff
  • Demonstrated ability to write IEPs, FBAs and behavior intervention plans with the use of Collaborative Proactive Solutions Approach
  • Demonstrate an understanding of current and best instructional practices in instruction designed to address Common Core and SEL Standards
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain a positively oriented learning environment
  • Strong communication skills
  • Understanding of Federal and State Special Education Regulations
  • Experience with students who exhibit high levels of anxiety, attention and behavioral needs
  • Demonstrates knowledge of trauma sensitive strategies and cultural competence
  • Demonstrates ability to motivate students using positive acknowledgements, personal interested and approach
  • Knowledge and/or experience with proactive crisis intervention strategies, ie CPI, Safety Care, CPS, Restorative Practices, etc..
  • Strong interpersonal and advocacy skills with the ability to make genuine connections with students.

    Education and Certification:
  • Transcripts from a recognized college or university indicating at least a Bachelor’s Degree in secondary special education.
  • RI Department of Education certification - Special Education Secondary level
  • Crisis Prevention Certification (or ability to become certified), ie CPI, Safety Care, CPS
  • Evidence of Professional Development and application in the area of Trauma, SEL, and/or Positive Behavior Intervention strategies
