Job Description
2021-2022 SCHOOL YEAR

Guidance Counselor - pending budget approval

Job Goal: Work with the School Counseling/Guidance Department to facilitate the academic, personal/social, and college/career development of assigned English Language Learners through implementation of a comprehensive Somerville High School Counseling program.

Provides direct service to assigned students, utilizing the following delivery methods (as appropriate) to implement the comprehensive school counseling program:
Large group instruction
Small group instruction
Individual planning/consultation
Group counseling
Individual counseling
Crisis intervention/mediation

Indirectly supports the academic, personal/social, and career development of assigned students through ongoing consultation and coordination with parent/guardians, school personnel, and applicable community resources.

Academic Domain:
Provides academic advising and support with course selection
Maintains records of progress toward graduation for assigned students
Maintains cumulative files for assigned students
Assists assigned students in resolving academic difficulties
Maintains and communicates knowledge (as appropriate) of additional resources for students experiencing academic difficulty
Maintains and communicates knowledge (as appropriate) of educational enrichment opportunities available to students
Participates as necessary in Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings
Coordinates and manages Section 504 services for assigned students
At the discretion of the Department Head or Headmaster, engages in other activities and events necessary to facilitate the academic development of assigned students.

Personal/Social Domain:
Facilitates activities that enhance the self-knowledge and well-being of assigned students
Provides short-term counseling, crisis intervention, and mediation services to assist students in the resolution of personal/social issues hampering their academic success
Refers students to appropriate mental health or other community resources as needed
Participates on the Student Intervention Team
At the discretion of the Department Head or Headmaster, engages in other activities and events necessary to facilitate the personal/social development of assigned students.

College and Career Readiness Domain:
Assists assigned students in the recognition and understanding of individual passions and interests that may translate into a meaningful post-secondary plan
Assists assigned students in the development of a personally meaningful career/life/graduation plan consistent with these passions
Provides career and post-secondary information consistent with students’ aspirations, abilities, and interests
Engages in activities necessary to facilitate students’ access to their career/life plan (referrals to CTE program, college and scholarship application process, recommendation writing, job search skill building)
At the discretion of the Department Head or Headmaster, engages in other activities and events necessary to facilitate the career development of assigned students.

Maintains an understanding of the services provided by the School Counseling/Guidance Department and effectively communicates those services to the constituencies served by Somerville High School.

Assists the Department Head in the design, implementation, and assessment of the comprehensive School Counseling/Guidance program.

Participates in professional development necessary to remain current with school counseling practices.

Participates in ongoing supervision to ensure that counseling practices are consistent with current standards, and legal and ethical guidelines as determined by the ACA (American Counseling Association and ASCA (American School Counseling Association.)

Other duties as assigned by the Department Head or Headmaster

Qualifications: Appropriate Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Educator's Licensure is required; School Guidance Counselor, Grades 5-12.

Position Reports to: School Principal and Guidance Department Chair
