2020-2021 SCHOOL YEAR

Associate Principal

Job Goal: The Associate Principal will be responsible for assisting the Principal in overseeing all academic programs at Somerville High School including the implementation of a 21st Century Ed-Plan developed through our new building project. This will include collaborating with Department Heads and Directors in the development and implementation of academic programs and corresponding systems of academic support.

•Coordinate and lead regularly scheduled meetings of academic administrators;
•Assist with direct communication with department heads and superintendent;
•Serve as a member of the Somerville High School administrative team and provide support and assistance to the other members of the team as needed;
•Assist in the implementation of the schools 21st Century Ed-Plan
•Support and encourage interdisciplinary and project-based learning through the adjacencies of spaces throughout the new building.
•Support the use of multiple teaching walls in learning environments that allow for student to student and small group teaching, and differentiation within a classroom.
•Assist in interweaving CTE programs with academic teaching spaces
•Oversee grade level teams including assigning staff, supervising regularly scheduled meetings, and developing and implementing systems of academic support;
•Assist the Principal in the evaluation of educators;
•Assist with the daily managing of Somerville High School and manage in the place of the Principal if he or she is unavailable;
•Attend committees, meetings, and night activities;
•To execute the rules, regulations, and directives of the School Committee and the
Superintendent of Schools;
•To provide direction and assistance to all matters pertaining to administration of the
•To organize the school in such a way that it will meet all accreditation standards;
•To meet with the Superintendent, administrative, and supervisory staffs for discussion,
revision, and preparation of program procedure and practices;
•To direct the supervisory program of the teaching, clerical, custodial, and cafeteria staff
personnel and activities;
•To assist the Superintendent of Schools and the Principal in selection of staff and to recommend teachers for reappointment and tenure;
•To work with the administration and the teaching staff in establishing a city-wide,
coordinated secondary school program;
•To prepare all reports required by the Superintendent or the Principal;
•To report to the Superintendent and the Principal regarding the needs of the school with respect to personnel, equipment, supplies, and curriculum;
•To assist in the preparation of master schedules of subjects and schedules for teachers and pupils;
•To counsel with and direct the curriculum implementations and innovations of teachers
through the Assistant Principals, Directors, and Department Heads;
•To be available at all times to consult with parents and teachers concerning the welfare of
any student;
•To interpret the school program to the community;
•To act in liaison capacity in his community between pupils, teachers, and parents;
•To cooperate with parent organizations and related educational groups to further the
program of the school;
•To develop with the Principal a program of public relations in order that the community may understand and support the educational program;
•To lead and to encourage the professional improvement of members of the staff, including working with the school Instructional Leadership Team (ILT) to provide professional development for staff;
•To act as the professional leader for members of the staff and direct faculty meetings, in-service training programs, and an orientation program for new staff members assigned to the school as required by the Principal;
•To maintain a cooperative and friendly relationship with administrative personnel;
•To develop a program for self-improvement and growth through reading, attending
conferences and workshops in order to provide professional leadership of the highesttype;
•To submit a written report to the Superintendent or the Principal as requested on a particular matter;
•Collaborate with the guidance department(s) to provide career planning activities and programs;
•Facilitate technology integration, information, communication, and training for students, staff, community and business leaders;
•Collaborate with post-secondary institutions to coordinate programs, develop articulation agreements, implement dual enrollment opportunities and expand the opportunities for all learners to access expanded learning community-based opportunities;
•Develop annual goals and objectives consistent with and in support of system goals and priorities;
•Advise and consult with summer school, adult education, Workforce/Community Services Coordinator and other administrators;
•In collaboration with the K – 8 Curriculum Coordinator, develop mini-integrated classes with middle school guidance counselors and educators to incorporate interdisciplinary units of study;
•Attend training sessions, conferences and workshops as assigned or appropriate to keep abreast of current practices, programs and legal issues;
•Represent the system in a positive and professional manner;
•Utilize appropriate strategies and problem solving skills to make decisions regarding planning, utilization of funds, delivering services and evaluation of services provided
•Identify potential problems or opportunities for improvement

Terms of Employment:
Work year is 227 days
