2021-2022 SCHOOL YEAR

Anticipated School Counselor

Job Goal: Counselors will work in collaboration with all members of the School Counseling Department and other staff, families and the Somerville community to facilitate the academic, personal/social, and college/career development of all students through implementation of a comprehensive Somerville High School Counseling program.

Valid DESE Massachusetts School Guidance Counselor (Grades 5-12) licensure required.

•Through the application of knowledge of best practices in high school counseling and by implementing anti-racist counseling practices, school counselors will serve as advocates who support students throughout high school. They will help students prepare for their post-secondary plans, help students maximize their academic achievement and social/emotional wellness while acknowledging every student’s unique intersectional identity. In partnership with other educators, parents/guardians, and the community, counselors will strive to ensure that all students at Somerville High develop the skills, knowledge, and understanding necessary to be successful in our changing society.
•Indirectly supports the academic, personal/social, and career development of assigned students through ongoing consultation and coordination with parents/guardians, school personnel, and applicable community resources.
•Provides direct service to assigned caseload of students, utilizing the following delivery methods (as appropriate) to implement the comprehensive school counseling program:
•Large group meetings
•Small group meetings
•Individual planning
•Consultation meetings
•Group counseling
•Individual/brief counseling
•Crisis response and intervention

Academic Domain:
•Provides academic advising and support with course selection for assigned students
•Facilitates schedule changes for students
•Maintains records of progress toward graduation
•Maintains cumulative files
•Supports students who have academic difficulties
•Maintains and communicates knowledge of additional resources for students experiencing academic difficulty
•Collaborates with teachers and staff to develop supportive interventions
•Maintains and communicates knowledge of educational enrichment opportunities available to students
•Participates as necessary in Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings
•Coordinates and oversees Section 504 services for assigned students
•Creates and documents Graduation Plans as needed
•Reviews transcripts for accuracy and works with the registrar and staff to resolve errors

Personal/Social Domain:
•Facilitates activities that enhance the self-knowledge and well-being of assigned students
•Provides short-term/brief counseling, crisis intervention, and mediation services to assist students in the resolution of personal/social issues influencing their success
•Refers students to appropriate mental health or other community resources as needed
•Participates in House meetings and SST/case conferences to facilitate or support a variety of interventions

College Career and Readiness Domain:
•Assists assigned students in the recognition and understanding of individual passions and interests that may translate into a meaningful post-secondary plan
•Assists assigned students in the development of a personally meaningful career/life/graduation plan consistent with these passions
•Provides career and post-secondary information consistent with students’ aspirations, abilities, and interests
•Engages in activities necessary to facilitate students’ access to their career/life plan (referrals to CTE program, college and scholarship application process, recommendation writing, job search skill building)

At the discretion of the School Principal and/or SHS Guidance Department Chair, engages in other activities and events necessary to facilitate the academic development of assigned students.

Maintains an understanding of the services provided by the School Counseling Department and Somerville High School and effectively communicates those services to constituencies.

Assists in the design, implementation, and assessment of the comprehensive School Counseling program.

Participates in professional development necessary to remain current with school counseling practices.

Participates in ongoing supervision to ensure that counseling practices are consistent with current standards, and legal and ethical guidelines as determined by the MASCA (Massachusetts School Counselors Association) and ASCA (American School Counseling Association.)
