Class Title: Integrated Preschool Special Education Teacher FTE: 0.5

Supervision by: Principal / Early Childhood Coordinator

Nature and Scope of Position:

Westerly Public Schools seeks a highly effective preschool special educator to join our Brightstars 5 star preschool for our morning session (3 year olds). The successful candidate will have the skill set to create a safe learning environment where all students are engaged in learning at their readiness level towards RI Early Learning Standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Designs and implements instruction that develops communication skills, motor skills, social emotional skills, and academic learning skills
  • Provides small group instruction to students to meet their individualized IEP goals.
  • Coordinates compliance with all special education regulations.
  • Writes and implements goals and objectives consistent with students Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and provide timely and regular progress reports on student development.
  • Conducts evaluations or provide data as requested to guide the IEP for a student.
  • Develops and implements behavior intervention plans to promote positive behaviors
  • Collaborates as a team member within preschool in supporting other staff members in responding to student's needs.
  • Supervises paraprofessionals through specific expectations and feedback.
  • Sets ambitious learning goals for all students, creates cognitively demanding tasks, and models the belief that that all students can master challenging material through effective effort.
  • Assesses students’ understanding regularly with ambitious learning goals in mind and takes ownership of making necessary adjustments to instruction to reach goals despite setbacks.
  • Passionate and optimistic about their students, their content, and the teaching profession.
  • Can convey content in creative and engaging ways that align to standards
  • Scaffolds and differentiates instruction in order for all students to develop their early learning skills
  • Uses instructional practices that are likely to challenge, motivate, and engage all students and facilitate equitable, active student participation
  • Builds a productive learning environment where every student participates and is valued as part of the class community
  • Actively creates and maintains an environment in which students’ diverse backgrounds, identities, strengths, and challenges are respected
  • Engages with families and builds collaborative, respectful relationships with them in service of student learning
  • Works with colleagues to develop family engagement activities throughout the year
  • Conducts home visits to collaborate with families in student’s learning and development
  • Regularly reflects on practice, seeks and responds to feedback, and demonstrates self-awareness and commitment to continuous learning and development
  • Seeks to participate in and contribute to a collaborative adult learning community.

    Qualifications - Required:

    Education:

    Hold a Bachelor's degree.

    Must hold an active RIDE certification in Early Childhood Teacher and Special Educator (PK)

    Experience with integrated preschool instruction preferred.

    Job Requirements
    Current, appropriate RIDE Certification on file - PreK and Special Education *National (fingerprint) Background Check results at time of hire.
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience preferred
  • Bachelor degree preferred
  • Citizenship, residency or work VISA in United States required
