Job Description

General Statement of Duties: To provide safe and efficient transportation so that students may enjoy the fullest possible advantage from the district’s curriculum and extracurricular program.

Supervision Received: Reports to the Director of Transportation

Illustrative examples of work performed:
  • Obeys all traffic laws
  • Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses
  • Maintains discipline when students are on bus
  • Reports undisciplined students to the proper authority
  • Keeps assigned bus clean
  • Keeps to assigned schedule
  • Perform a Pre and Post DOT inspection before and after each operation for mechanical defects
  • Notifies the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness
  • Discharges students only at authorized stops
  • Exercises responsible leadership when on out-of-district school trips
  • Transports only authorized students and School Department staff
  • Reports all accidents and completes required reports
  • Enforces regulations against smoking and eating on the bus
  • To do related work as required

    Knowledge, skills and capabilities:
  • A RI CDL class B license with school bus certification
  • Demonstrates aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities
  • All Federal DOT and RI General Law requirements must be fulfilled at time of application

    Education: Must have a high school diploma, or equivalent.

    Experience: Prefer previous bus driving experience, but is not required.

    Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Support Services Personnel.
