ANNOUNCEMENT OF A VACANCY FOR THE 2020-2021 SCHOOL YEAR
Temporary PT Reading/Writing 4 Teacher SCALE SOMERVILLE CENTER FOR ADULT LEARNING EXPERIENCES
Job Goal: The Reading/Writing 4 Teacher will be primarily responsible for raising the reading and writing levels of a class of approximately 15-20 adult students. Students range in age and previous education; English is the second language for the majority of our students. Most students are working towards earning a high school equivalency credential. To this end, the RW teacher is also responsible for teaching a range of science and social studies topics. Although experience teaching literacy in the content areas is preferred, it is essential that the RW teacher has had training in and successful experience teaching explicit reading and writing skills/strategies. The RW teacher will work with the Program Administrator to plan curriculum. The instructor must keep attendance records, document student progress, and assist with other DESE-related activities. Responsibilities: •Prepare and maintain written lesson plans and follow College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) for ELA (including History/Social Studies and Science) •Evaluate student progress and make placement recommendations •Complete DESE attendance and assessment–related activities •Attend monthly department meetings and meet with supervisor as needed •Follow department policy/procedures regarding substitutes and substitute lesson plans
Minimum Qualifications: •Master’s Degree (in literacy instruction, preferred) •MA Teacher Certification •Two years of experience teaching literacy •Experience with computer-based programs and Internet resources •Basic digital literacy
Terms of Employment: •SCALE School Year Schedule •9 Teaching Hours per week: Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays (9:00 am - 12:00 pm) •Additional 2 preparation hours per week •Monthly staff meetings at times to be determined

Since 1974, SCALE has provided classes and support services to more than 1,200 adult learners (16 years and older) annually who need basic reading, writing and math skills, English instruction for non-native speakers, or a high-school credential. SCALE's fully accessible facilities have a computer lab and an on-site HiSET Test Center. ELL and ABE classes are free. |
