PART-TIME MORNING POSITION

Job Goal: The Somerville Center for Adult Learning Experiences (S.C.A.L.E.) is now accepting applications for the position of part-time ELL Teacher – Career and Life Skills (CLS) level 3 to start at SCALE August 28th, with classes starting September 3, 2019. Classes are currently held remotely and may transition to in-person at SCALE, 167 Holland Street, Somerville, MA 02144.
The Career and Life Skills Level 3 class (which meets M, W, F) focuses on English reading, writing, speaking, listening, vocabulary, and grammar. The class also incorporates and emphasizes skills that help learners succeed in the workplace which include: Developing skills to locate, evaluate, and interpret career information, identify interests, skills, and personal preferences that influence career and education choices, Identify pathways that match career and education goals.

The teacher of the Career and Life Skills 3 (CLS 3) class is responsible for delivering engaging, active, learner-centered lessons and instructing adult immigrant students at a high-intermediate level of ELL at SCALE.

Technology is integrated to enhance instruction. Lessons should include the use of technology that students are expected to use in the workplace.

Teachers align instruction to the Massachusetts English Language Proficiency Standards for Adult Education, follow the SCALE ELL curriculum, attend monthly department meetings, monitor and communicate with students about their progress, and work with the ELL counselor, program administrator, and an active and diverse team of teaching colleagues to provide a rigorous and meaningful educational experience that advances students toward their goals. Teachers are expected to participate in staff development activities throughout the year and may also collaborate with Education and Career Advisors and external career readiness and post-secondary education partners.
Minimum Qualifications:
•Bachelor’s degree in education preferred
•Experience teaching academic skills, career readiness, college preparation
•Ability to integrate technology to enhance instruction (Google classrooms, Zoom, online instructional tools such as Burlington English, Northstar, Aztec, etc.)
•Demonstrated knowledge of a variety of learner-centered teaching approaches and effective tech integrated skills activities
•Curriculum development experience desirable
•Massachusetts Teacher Certification a plus
•BEST Plus and TABE-e Reading certification is preferred

Responsibilities:
•Prepare lesson plans and choose appropriate materials, following the ELL Department’s Curriculum Guidelines and MA DESE English Language Proficiency Standards, and submit one lesson plan per month.
•Attend and participate in department meetings and appropriate in-service workshops.
•Evaluate student progress and make placement recommendations as required by department policy/procedures.
•Complete attendance and assessment-related activities as required by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).
•Work effectively with other teachers, counselor(s) and program administrator on student and program issues.
•Follow department policy/procedures regarding substitutes and substitute lesson plans.
•Integrate technology into instruction.

Application Requirements:
•Completion of an extensive application packet, including copies of social security card and government issued identification.
•Completion of C.O.R.I form
•Completion of the National Fingerprint-based background check in accordance with M.G.L. c. 71, §38G.
•Job requires computer use.
•General office and classroom environment with air conditioning and fluorescent lighting.

Schedule:
•Part Time: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
•9 teaching hours and 2 preparation hours per week
•Monthly meetings, 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. or 5:00 -6:00pm
•Teaching responsibilities begin immediately and continue through the end of our second instructional cycle in May or June 2020. (Please note that the actual end date will be determined after snow days or other cancellations.)

Since 1974, SCALE has provided classes and support services to more than 1,200 adult learners (16 years and older) annually who need basic reading, writing and math skills, English instruction for non-native speakers, or a high-school credential. SCALE's fully accessible facilities have a computer lab and an on-site HiSET Test Center. ELL and ABE classes are free.
