ANNOUNCEMENT OF A VACANCY FOR THE
2020-2021 SCHOOL YEAR

Part Time Evening ELL Education and Career Advisor - Due to resignation and pending budget approval
Somerville Center for Adult Learning Experiences (SCALE)

Job Goal:
The part-time evening Education and Career Advisor in the English Language Learning Department at SCALE has a key role in ensuring that SCALE meets our goals for learners and for the program as a whole. The Education and Career Advisor (ECA) does intake, testing, and placement of students into ELL classes and supports them with basic academic and survival counseling and referrals. The ECA monitors learner progress and handles student issues that arise both in and outside of classes. When appropriate/possible, counseling services are provided in the first language of the learner. The ECA works with all students to identify academic and career goals and supports teachers in implementing the job readiness portion of the curriculum.

The ECA works two evenings per week during our academic year, which runs from September through the end of May or June, depending on snow days.

Sypnopsis:
The Somerville Center for Adult Learning Experiences (S.C.A.L.E.) is now accepting applications for the position of part-time evening ELL Education and Career Advisor to start immediately.

Minimum Qualifications:
•Oral and aural fluency in Haitian Creole and Spanish or Portuguese
•Bachelor's Degree in Counseling or related field; ABE certification or Masters/Counseling certification preferred
•Two years successful and relevant counseling experience in adult education
•Experience working with adult learner population as well as the 16-21 adult population
•Experience working with trauma victims
•Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to effectively collaborate with students, teachers, and administrators
•Excellent organizational, time management, oral and written communication skills in English
•Excellent computer skills, including MS Office suite, internet/email, and career development databases
•Familiarity with BEST Plus 2.0 and the TABE Class-E, MAPT DESE required assessments is a plus

Responsibilities:
•Coordinate intake, testing, and orientation of new learners.
•Place students appropriately so that classes are fully enrolled. Maintain full enrollment whenever possible.
•Provide academic, basic survival and limited personal counseling for current students.
•Make referrals for psychological, economic, and other learner needs that present barriers to persistence and success.
•Maintain learner records, including waitlists, attendance, intake assessment results, evaluations, and progress.
•Coordinate with program administrator and other program counselors in the creation and implementation of department counseling activities and procedures.
•Work with individual students and classes to create education and career plans that articulate each student’s academic and career goals with an action plan to attain those goals.
•Use Internet applications to support and deliver career exploration and job search services.
•In collaboration with team members, organize and facilitate appropriate informational presentations for students about colleges, careers, immigration, health care, workers’ rights/safety, and a variety of other topics.
•Assist counseling team members with the acquisition, maintenance, and dissemination of information regarding college transition programs, training programs, career fields, employment opportunities, and specific employers for full-time, part-time, internship, and work-study opportunities.
•Stay abreast of and disseminate information concerning immigration policies that affect students.
•Act as a liaison between learners and teachers.
•Work on learner retention and conduct follow-up as mandated by DESE.
•Participate in department meetings and appropriate professional development activities.
•Communicate effectively with other counselors, teachers, and program administrator on student and program issues.
•Assist in establishing and maintaining the goals, philosophy, and policies of SCALE.
•Perform other miscellaneous department and/or SCALE duties as deemed appropriate by the program administrator.

Terms of Employment:
•Part time: Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 4:30-8:30p.m. or 5:00-9:00p.m.

Physical Demands:
Job requires computer use. General office and classroom environment with air conditioning and fluorescent lighting.
Salary:
Salary is dependent on education level and experience in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.

Position Reports to: ELL Program Administrator or designee

Since 1974, SCALE has provided classes and support services to more than 1,200 adult learners (16 years and older) annually who need basic reading, writing and math skills, English instruction for non-native speakers, or a high-school credential. SCALE's fully accessible facilities have a computer lab and an on-site HiSET Test Center. ELL and ABE classes are free.
