SOMERVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Job Goal: The Mediator is responsible for working with the Lead Mediator to provide mediation services to students and staff district-wide. The Mediator is also responsible in assisting the Lead Mediator to reach out to students, parents, teachers and other school personnel and provide training in the techniques of conflict mediation.

Qualifications:
•Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Social Work, or related field preferred.
•Specific coursework/training in conflict resolution and/or mediation required.
•Bilingual ability desirable.
•Ability to function independently.
•Attention to detail, and prioritize multiple projects is essential.
•Proven communication and effective interpersonal skills required.
•Should demonstrate leadership qualities and effective consensus skills.

Responsibilities:
•Assist in processing mediation requests/referrals; scheduling mediations, coordinating and conducting mediation sessions, monitoring agreements, maintaining records, and issuing reports on services provided.
•Assist in creating and delivering presentations regarding mediation and the conflict mediation program.
•In collaboration with the Lead Mediator, provide individual and small group services relative to mediation issues of clients.
•In collaboration with the Lead Mediator, conduct and share research studies which determine the nature. of conflicts and analyze factors affecting. attitudes and morale.
•Assist in the exploration of grant application opportunities.
•Along with the Lead Mediator, serve as a resource for Somerville Public Schools crisis situations and help coordinate professional mediator response as required.
•In collaboration with the Lead Mediator, support K-12 mediation initiatives, and oversee peer mediation programming at SPS.
•In collaboration with the Lead Mediator, coordinate with community agencies and others with related responsibilities.
•Perform other duties as may.be assigned.

Position Reports to: Lead Mediator, Director of Student Services, and High School Principal

Terms of Employment:
40 hours per week- 11 months per year. Non-union position.
