ANNOUNCEMENT OF A VACANCY FOR THE
2020-2021 SCHOOL YEAR

Interim Redirect Teacher - Due to a Temp reassignment - Pending budget approval
EAST SOMERVILLE COMMUNITY SCHOOL

Job Goal: Redirection is a Somerville Public School Program that attempts to identify and support the “At Risk Students” or otherwise identified students. The Redirect teacher monitors the attendance, tardiness, grades and behavior of students and works closely with students and teachers. The Redirect teacher acts as a liaison between school personnel, outside agencies and parents when appropriate. Home visits may be made and tutoring given when necessary.

Qualifications:
•Massachusetts DESE teaching license in appropriate subject area and grade level required; Adjustment Counselor or guidance certification preferred
•Three years of classroom teaching experience

•Bilingual in Spanish preferred
•Experience with disadvantaged students preferred

Responsibilities:
1.Provide an orientation program to parents and students in the program
a)Review attendance policy of school department
b)Review individual record of attendance with parent, teacher and the student
c)Review academic and related records with parent, teacher and student individually

2.Monitor attendance and tardy records
a)Keep daily attendance records
b)Notify parents of concerns with regard to attendance and provide information on parental responsibilities with regard to attendance
c)Call students who are absent without a parent call when appropriate
d)Provide classroom teacher with information regarding student absences when needed
e)Work with students who are chronically absent and /or tardy to improve attendance;
f)Work with attendance officer on problematic attendance concerns
g)Provide truant students with consequences and support designed to improve their attendance and punctuality
h)Contribute to creating a positive connection with parents / students struggling with attendance / behavior issues
i)Responsible for school safety line and parent calls with regards to absentees; follows up with calls when appropriate.

3.Address academic needs of identified students
a)Set up individualized program by reviewing record of student and explain expectations at Somerville High School
b)Communicate the student’s situation to the staff and work cooperatively to address student needs
c)Tutor group / individually
d)Act as a liaison between the parent /guardian / staff and arrange for make up work/schedule meetings when necessary
e)Address deficiencies in basic skills
f)Support the Student Teacher Assistance Team (STAT)
g)Refer students to school-based and community-based clubs and agencies

4.Maintain Active Communication:
a)Among student, teacher and parent
b)With school personnel
c)Refer to STAT when appropriate

5.Address Behavioral Problems
a)Establish relationship with student
b)Address disruptive behavior before discipline code enforcement is necessary; offer students behavior options by recommending positive choices
c)Set up a monitoring program including a behavior contract when appropriate;
d)Coordinate “Behavior Forms” and assign consequences for inappropriate behavior when necessary; file completed behavior forms for reference
e)Refer student to counselor if necessary
f)Provide support with in-school suspension students / lunch detention students, etc.
g)Provide a “time-out” area for students having difficulty within school settings, with the goal of returning the student to the scheduled setting as soon as possible.

6.Any other duties as assigned by the School Principal.
