ANNOUNCEMENT OF VACANCY FOR THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR Advancing Equity Task Force Member SOMERVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS Job Goal: Somerville Public Schools defines equity as providing the opportunities, support, environment, high expectations, and resources that every student needs to achieve educational success, to feel valued, and contribute to a thriving community. This is different than equality, which means providing each individual student with the exact same conditions or resources regardless of need. SPS students have the right to respectful learning environments in which all of their identities, especially their racial and ethnic diversity, are valued and contribute to successful academic outcomes. The SPS Advancing Equity Task Force will focus on improving the learning environments of all students by identifying, understanding, and mitigating or removing the barriers of current inequities, while also highlighting and advancing best practices in policy and practice. Qualifications: ? Staff member of Somerville Public Schools (staff members in any role are encouraged and welcome to apply) ? Experience in and willingness to engage in personal identity reflection (including racial identity) ? Understanding in the advancement of cultural proficiency, equity, diversity, and inclusion in classroom and school environments ? Effective communication and interpersonal skill, especially when having conversations about equity, inequities, race, difference, and various forms of oppression ? Solutions oriented problem solver Responsibilities: ? Develop immediate, short, and long-term vision for equity in Somerville Public Schools ? Develop common definitions for key terms (diversity, inclusion, cultural proficiency, etc.) ? Review District and School policies through a lens of equity ? Develop process and protocol for Equity Walks ? Review data pertaining to inequities and make recommendations and implementation plan ? Commit to continuous learning as a team by engaging in group learning experiences (common books, webinars, etc.) ? Promote ongoing problem solving and reflection in a solutions oriented manner Terms of Employment: ? May 1 - August 31 ? 10 hours total work time from May 1 - June 30 ? 20 hours total work time from July 1 - August 31 ?
