2020 CALCULUS PROJECT SUMMER PROGRAM

The Calculus Project Summer Program
Learning Designers/Instructors (3 positions)
ARGENZIANO SCHOOL

Job Goal: The Somerville Calculus Project supports black and Latina/o students as they explore and develop a deeper appreciation of mathematics. Once students are enrolled, the Calculus Project remains with them throughout their journeys towards academic success, self-exploration, social impact, and a love of learning. Each summer, students come together for 3 weeks of deep, rigorous, engaging, math experiences. The Calculus Project experience encourages students to bring their full selves, commit their minds to their development, and be designers of their futures. They explore what it means to be “a person like me” both for their currents selves and for the people they wish to be. We aim to expose students to possibility and eliminate self- and socially-imposed mental constraints.

Our students think flexibly, face challenges with courage, and strive for their personal best. We are searching for eight (8) staff members who will do the same. Staff are expected to be on campus 5 hours each day, with an optional, compensated, 1.5 hour after school component for those who are interested.

Requirements:
• Pre-Algebra & Algebra (appropriate MA mathematics license required)
• Geometry & Algebra II (appropriate MA mathematics license required)
• Pre-Calculus (appropriate MA mathematics license required)

Qualifications:
• Deep knowledge of the appropriate grade-level standards
• An ability to create and manage a teacher-led, student-centered classroom environment
• An appreciation for the diverse and rich experiences of TCP students and families
• Licensure in teaching area
• A deep respect for the lived experiences of TCP students; a desire to engage as equals through the Count Forward series, a series of conversations, discussions and presentations meant to disrupt deficit thinking and highlight (or remind) students of the contributions of professionals of color to the U.S. social fabric and the STEM field in particular

Responsibilities:
• Facilitate learning so that students conceptualize and apply pertinent math concepts effectively
• Fill student skill and knowledge gaps through intentional instructional design
• Encourage and support students’ self-development (as owners of their learning) at all times
• Create a culture of math exploration, and counteract pressures to seek and reward right answers
• Design lessons that enable students to learn more deeply; encourage all students to do so
• Evaluate and adapt short-term projects to fit the allotted time and targeted summer learning goals
• Provide direct instruction for up to 2.5 hours each day
• Administer pre- and post-assessments
• Work with school-year staff to ensure instructional alignment
• Participate in two 6-hour TCP staff preparation sessions prior to the start of the program
• Assume that every student has a superpower; you can help them find it.

Terms of Employment:
Session Details (18 days):
• Monday – Friday, 9:00am – 2:00pm
• Start Date: July 6, 2020
• End Date: July 29, 2020
• Stipend: $3,456

Position Reports to: Assistant Superintendent or designee
