Crisis Counselor
NEXT WAVE AND FULL CIRCLE ALTERNATIVE HIGH SCHOOLS

Job Goal:
Next Wave Junior High and Full Circle High School are Somerville’s public, alternative moderate special needs (502.4i) school for grades 6 through 12. The schools are designed to meet the special academic, social, emotional and behavioral needs of adolescents, ages 12-20, who for many reasons, have experienced historical school failure in the traditional mainstream educational system.

Responsibilities:
• Provide crisis counseling to all students when social, emotional, environmental or physical conditions interferes with the learning process or their adjustment to school
• Provide individual and group counseling with the supervision of the Clinical Coordinator and Principal
• Supervise students at all levels of classroom exclusion and facilitate the consequence – process – return to classroom routine.
• Implement crisis intervention and prevention techniques
• Coordinate behavior management strategies and implement social/emotional curriculum
• Coordinate positive reinforcement efforts in conjunction with other staff
• Manage IEP’s (attend annual meetings and prepare IEP) and prepare clinical case conferences presented at staff meetings
• Be a resource for teachers/staff in developing socio-behavioral goals for individual students
• Communicate with outside human service agencies which provide services to students
• Attend staff meetings (bi-weekly) and share in responsibilities (chair, minutes)
• Participate in supervision provided by principal
• Share responsibility for break, lunch and dismissal coverage
• Help plan and supervise school activities (field trips, parent nights, graduation, etc…)
• Assist in bi-yearly class scheduling and transitions
• Attend professional development workshops and sessions organize by school, Central Administration and the Special Education Development.
• Participate on school based committees as needed (hiring, school council, scholarship, etc.)
• Maintain appropriate records and reports
• Other duties to be assigned by the principal.

Qualifications:
• DESE School Social Worker/Adjustment Counselor License and LICSW
• Master’s Degree in Social Work
• Minimum of 3 years experience working with emotionally disturbed children/adolescents in a clinical or educational therapeutic milieu in which s/he was providing direct, clinical services.
• Experience providing clinical supervision to a multidisciplinary team.
• Demonstrate competence in a range of therapeutic modalities including individual, group and family therapies
• Experience with developing accommodations and modifications to make curriculum accessible to students with special needs. Experience with the IEP process
• Experience with middle school and high school curriculum, instruction and assessment practices
• Familiarity with alternative education, behavior management interventions and supports (CPI certified)
• Ability to maintain a safe and healthy environment for students
• Strong organizational and effective communication skills
• Experience working with a team
