Symphonic Ensemble Conductor
El Sistema-Inspired After School Program
EAST SOMERVILLE COMMUNITY SCHOOL

Job Goal: The El Sistema/Community Schools program at the East Somerville Community School is seeking a Symphonic Ensemble Conductor for our El Sistema inspired, intensive after school music program. The program provides exceptional ensemble-based music instruction to students in grades 3–8 in string and full orchestras, wind ensemble, sectionals and musicianship classes. Our goals are to promote character development, positive citizenship and increased musical and academic achievement.

Applicants should be motivated, inspiring individuals who have strong leadership skills and believe in the capacity of an El Sistema program to affect social change.
The Symphonic Ensemble Conductor will provide group instruction, repertoire selection, large and small group rehearsal, rehearsal conducting and performance conduction. This position will be supervised by the Director of El Sistema Somerville.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Music/Music Education, Advanced Degree preferred
• Previous conducting experience
• Excellent musicianship and artistry as a teacher/performer
• Strong conducting skills and previous experience working with mixed-instrument groups, bands or wind ensembles
• Exemplary performance skills on a primary wind or brass instrument
(performance skills on multiple instruments desired)
• Strong understanding of ensemble pedagogy
• Strong commitment to El Sistema’s philosophy of social change through music
• Experience working with children from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Self-motivated and willing to collaborate in a team-teaching environment
• At least 2 years of prior group teaching experience preferred
• Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred

Responsibilities:
• Lead symphonic rehearsals for beginning and advancing students, lead sectional rehearsals as needed
• Lead and Assist full orchestra rehearsals and coordinate lesson plans with all teaching artists
• Develop, refine and implement repertoire and curriculum in collaboration with the Director of El Sistema Somerville
• Select and arrange repertoire to meet the needs of students at various ages and ability levels
• Develop and teach engaging rehearsals:
o Establish routines and encourage development of strong fundamental skills on all instruments
o Incorporate a variety of strategies (developing embouchures, movement, ear training, music reading) and activities (exercises, games, demonstration, listening, etc.)
o Maintain excellent classroom management
o Adapt to the needs of students at various levels and with various learning styles
o Encourage peer teaching
• Collaborate closely with the Director of El Sistema Somerville and all El Sistema Teaching Artists to achieve program-wide learning goals
• Help recruit new students by promoting the program and giving instrument demonstrations in various School Buildings throughout the Somerville Public School District
• Maintain a positive and nurturing rehearsal environment
• Set and maintain high standards for student behavior and music learning
• Enforce program rules and policies

Terms of Employment:
• Scheduled School Year (September-June)
• 2 days per week - Wednesday and Fridays - 2pm – 5:30pm
• 36 weeks / Up to 7 hours per week
• Hourly rate based on experience
