Technology Operator
(SCALE)
SOMERVILLE CENTER FOR ADULT LEARNING EXPERIENCES

Job Goal: The part-time Technology Specialist provides class support for evening instructors using the computer lab and assists students in the lab under the supervision of the instructor. Patience and kindness are vital in working with our students, many of whom have limited English and limited computer literacy.

Minimum Qualifications:
• High School Diploma or Equivalent, Associates or Bachelor’s degree preferred
• Ability to work patiently and respectfully with non-native English speaking adults at all levels
• Proficiency with MS Office suite (with the exclusion of Access)
• Ability to learn and troubleshoot basic educational software programs and interactive websites
• Classroom experience with adults preferred
• Ability to work both independently and in collaboration with instructors
• Ability to speak Spanish, Portuguese, or Haitian Creole would be a plus!

Responsibilities:
• Work collaboratively with SCALE staff to enhance classroom activities including setting up equipment, accessing educational tools.
• Assist in orienting new and current staff to the resources available in the computer lab.
• Assist staff and students with troubleshooting and/or resolving workstation issues.
• Maintain user accounts on servers (e.g. authorization, access, passwords, etc.) for the purpose of regulating access to files and folders.
• Perform basic network troubleshooting on all computers.
• Update software and provide recommendations for hardware purchases and updates to the Computer Operator Specialist.
• Maintain computer lab and equipment
• Conduct routine inventory of all hardware and software
• Create daily security process to ensure all equipment is properly secured.

Terms of Employment:
• This is an evening position, for two nights per week, approximately 6 – 8 hours per week, working with classes that meet Tuesday and Thursday 6-9pm for the duration of the academic year.
• There will be some initial training with the Technology Coordinator and the full-time Computer Operator. Precise schedule will be negotiated with the successful candidate

Work Environment:
Job requires computer use. General office and classroom environment with air conditioning and fluorescent lighting.

SCALE's fully accessible facilities have a computer lab and an on-site HiSET Test Center. ELL and ABE classes are free.
