Early Childhood Intern
Somerville Partnership for Young Children
EARLY EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

Job Goal: The Early Childhood Intern is a grant-funded position that will serve preschool students, teachers, and families in Somerville Public Schools and in community-based early education and care programs as part of the Somerville Partnership for Young Children (SPYC). The SPYC is a coordinated effort between Somerville Public Schools, the City of Somerville, Head Start, community-based early education centers and other community organizations. SPYC supports children’s readiness to learn in a culturally responsive, inter-agency system by providing a range of academic, developmental, and mental health supports to nurture their full potential. The SPYC endeavors to provide universal access to high quality programming that enhances children’s cognitive, social, and emotional development, and promotes children’s growth in language, literacy, mathematics, science, social and emotional development, creative arts, physical development, and approaches to learning.

As part of this effort to advance high quality programming, the Early Childhood Intern will provide classroom support to teachers in early education SPYC classrooms and form relationships with children that will foster social, emotional, and cognitive growth in the Programs. This position is ideal for someone pursuing a degree in early childhood education and will provide this individual with the opportunity to engage in enriching and diverse learning experiences across multiple Programs.

Primary Responsibilities:
• Provide classroom support to teachers in a variety of early education classrooms.
• Assist program teachers, staff, and directors in fostering a safe, positive, and stimulating environment for all children in accordance with SPYC and early education program policies.
• Assist staff in the supervision of children to ensure the health, wellbeing, and safety of all children.
• Provide support to program directors to support center activities.
• Maintain child confidentiality following FERPA, IDEA and HIPPA guidelines when needed.
• Other such duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
• At least some relevant experience with pre- school-aged children required.
• Associates or Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred.
• Ability to form and maintain strong professional relationships with staff and parents.
• Compassion, empathy, and strong communication skills.

Terms of Employment:
• Part Time/up to 19 hours per week
