2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR

Substitute Teachers
Somerville Community Schools Afterschool Program

Job Goal: The Somerville Community Schools Program provides After School and Out of School Time Care in the Somerville Public Schools. We operate After School programs from dismissal until end of program including early release days; full day programs during school vacation weeks and during summer. It is our mission to provide high quality, affordable, Out of School Time Care to Somerville children in grades Pre-K through 8

Substitutes will lead an academic/homework block, enrichment block, and free block between 2:35pm (1:45 Pre-K) and 5:30 or 12:00 (11:35 Pre-K) and 5:30 on early release day under the direction of the Site Coordinator or Assistant Coordinator. The substitute may also assist a lead teacher or support students individually if needed.

Assuming you are available for substitute teacher assignments, your services will be intermittent in nature and service on one occasion will not necessarily relate to service to another occasion. Employment in this regard, is therefore not applicable under the provisions of chapter 71, Section 41 of the Massachusetts General Laws pertaining to tenure of teachers and superintendents. In any event, I can provide you with reasonable assurance of employment as a substitute teacher during the forthcoming year.

This position is a Part Time position and is not eligible for benefits.

Qualifications:
• Have a Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree with at least six months of experience working with school age children.
Or

• Have a high school diploma or equivalent and at least one year of experience working with school age children including three months supervised experience with school age children.

Responsibilities:
Teaching
• Lead small and large group activities by following the curriculum provided by Site Coordinator
• Follow Lead Teacher’s daily schedule
• Travel to multiple sites as needed depending where a substitute is needed
• Supervise and interact with children in a positive supportive manner
• Assist in maintaining a relaxed, supportive atmosphere in the classroom
• Discipline children in accordance with Community Schools Staff Handbook
• Follow program health and safety procedures as stated in Staff Handbook
• Assist in maintaining classroom environment including daily set up and clean up
• Build positive relationships with families and co-workers
• Maintain classroom cleanliness and organization
• Other duties as assigned
