Calculus Project School Year Coordinator

Job Goal: The Somerville Calculus Project aims to increase the number of Black, Latin (students with families from South or Central America), and income-qualifying students taking higher-level math courses in high school. The Calculus Project supports students as they move through the grades on their paths towards success. The school-year component of the Calculus Project offers cohorts of students the opportunity to travel to the Somerville High School for personalized mathematics pre-teaching and engaging math activities. The Calculus Project seeks to remove barriers to student success, provide students with a space where they can fully be themselves, and an environment where they experience academic belonging. Participation in the program is free for students and includes after school snacks. The development of the school-year program will be the main responsibility of the Calculus Project School Year Coordinator.

Preferred Qualifications:
? Ability to maintain an engaging, safe, and healthy environment for students
? Ability to communicate with staff, students, and families from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds
? Dese License to teach High School math
? Willingness to implement TCP Pride Curriculum, which teaches students about the historical importance of STEM professionals of color, and connects them with successful STEM professionals of color

? Coordinate with middle grades and high school teachers in order to recruit and support students to excel academically
? Facilitate planning meetings with external stakeholders, middle grades math teachers, and SHS teachers
? Encourage and support students’ self-management in the classroom and school buildings
? Communicate effectively with parents and guardians as needed
? Facilitate personalized learning, using an online learning platform
? Monitor and support students’ academic growth and develop systems for sharing progress with classroom teachers
? Support the development of a system to ensure Calculus Project students have access to a rigorous course of mathematics study in the middle grades
? Coordinate placement of Calculus Project students into 9th grade coursework in a way that is aligned with the goals of the Calculus Project
? Facilitate placement of Calculus Project students into mathematics classes with other Calculus Project students and in collaboration with Guidance Counselors to support student collaboration and maintain cohort relationships
? Work with school-year staff to ensure instructional alignment
? Develop Professional Development sessions as needed
? Collaborate with, empower, and support the development of Somerville High School Peer Mentors
? Help plan summer program

Terms of Employment:
• Yearly Appointment (November 4, 2019 – June 12, 2020)
• 32 weeks per scheduled school year
• $27 per hour/up to 5 hours per week
