Job Description
LOCATION: Ezra H. Baker

HOURS: Regular School Hours, M-F

EFFECTIVE: Immediately

SALARY: Per the collective bargaining agreement between DYRSC and DYRSAA

Summary: Responsible for addressing the immediate health needs of students in classroom for medically fragile students and providing onsite care. Work schedule as assigned by building principal. Assignments are not binding and may be adjusted by administration at any time based on district needs. You are an employee of the District not necessarily one specific school or program.

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned by administration.
-Provides prescribed medical treatment and services to students with mental, physical, emotional or developmental impairments.
-Administers specified medication, orally or by injections, to students.
-Maintains medical records for students.
-Maintains communication with classroom teacher, school nurse and parents, and if appropriate, student’s physician.
-Participates in district school nurse meetings and professional development.
-Assess student’s basic health status (i.e. oxygen, blood pressure, heart rate, etc.)
-Makes informed judgements based on health data and determine specific elements of nursing care mandated by situations.
-Assists school nurse in designing, implementing and reassessing student’s health care plan.
-Evaluate outcomes of basic nursing intervention and initiate or encourage change in plans of care.
-Other duties as assigned that may be specific to student (i.e. check blood sugar, suctioning, feeding and feeding tubes, toileting, personal hygiene, etc.)
-Assists student with education tasks.
-Foster student independence while supporting individual needs.
-Assist in the lifting and/or toileting of student into medical equipment, such as standers or other adaptive equipment as needed or as required in IEP.
-Maintain proper confidentiality of student records.
-Set a good example in terms of dress, punctuality and attendance.
-Supporting the toileting and daily living skills of students can be an essential function of the job.

Job Requirements
Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Individuals must be able to adapt to changing situations. Individuals must be able to work cooperatively with students, colleagues, and administrators/supervisors. Supervision: Works under the general direction of the classroom teacher for academics and school nurse for medical. Evaluation is completed by the school principal in collaboration with nurse leader.

Certificates/license/registration: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) license. CPR, First Aid Certification desirable. Participate in annual training for blood borne pathogens, universal precautions, 51A, bullying, epi-pen, etc.

Education and/or experience: Must be highly qualified. Associate’s degree from college. Knowledge of child development (intellectual, social/emotional, and physical) and 12 months experience working with students with special needs is desirable.

Language skills:
-Ability to read and interpret school records and documents, such as rules, policies, instructions, correspondence and procedures.
-Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
-Ability to speak effectively to groups of students, staff and parents/guardians as appropriate.

Mathematical skills:
-General knowledge of basic math skills to be able to support students in math classes at their grade level.

Reasoning ability:
-Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in oral, written or diagram form.
-Ability to flexibly problem-solve a wide range of situations.

Technology skills:
-Ability to navigate current technology. Some examples may include email, tablets, assistive technology, data collection. This may change as technology evolves.

Physical demands:
-The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
-The employee is regularly required to communicate and express him or herself.
-The employee is frequently required to move about, including: standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, climbing, balancing and the ability to get on/off the floor.

-The employee is frequently required use hands to hold and reach with hands and arms.
-The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
-Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
-Be able to push a student in a wheelchair, and perform lifts with assistance, as trained.
-Assists with the physical demands of the students by lifting, positioning, putting students in supportive devices and transferring students from wheelchairs for toileting and position change.
-May be required to move objects from one place to another.
