Job Description
Literacy Coach

Qualifications
  • Certification Requires: DESE License Elementary 1-6
  • Primary School Level Reading Certification Required
  • Orton Gillingham experience/certification preferred
    • Master’s Degree in Reading Education preferred
    • Experience as a classroom teacher within the age group assignment
    • Knowledge of technology and its use for reading diagnosis and literacy instruction
    • Knowledge of current testing diagnostics for literacy skills
    • Skilled in differentiated instruction
    • Understanding of the reading/writing connections
    • Knowledge and understanding of district & state assessments/data
    • Ability to analyze and prescribe instruction based on data results
    • Current in child and adolescent literature

    Responsibilities
    • Primarily work with teachers
    • Ability to establish positive relationships with staff
    • Plan and conduct professional development sessions for the educational community
    • Help teachers establish practices for continuous assessment and the design of classrooms for small group instruction
    • Ability to model literacy instruction
    • Formulating and instructing in differentiated grouping formats
    • Individualized instruction within whole group/small group settings
    • Scaffolding instruction to meet the needs of remedial and gifted readers within one class grouping
    • Conducting of formal assessment strategies and interpretation of reading tests and educational diagnostic assessments
    • Interpretation of state and district assessments
    • Use of formal group assessments, individual diagnostics, and formative assessment of reading abilities
    • Providing direct specialized instruction to struggling readers
    • Act as consultant to staff and students for literacy materials which align with other content area instructional frameworks
    • Interpret, analyze, and summarize district and state data
    • Attends Professional Learning Community meetings to coach staff members on instructional strategies
    • Provide literacy professional development opportunities for WPS staff
    • Prescribe and implement an instructional plan around student needs
    • Work in conjunction with the data coach to manage school level data

    District Responsibilities
    • Commitment to attend district wide meetings of literacy personnel within contractual time
    • Submit Reading/ELA PARCC/MCAS analysis for building/district strengths and weaknesses
    • Work to develop common, documented PARCC/MCAS preparation curriculum
    • Develop varied assessment practices and tools for the district in concert with the District K-12 Assessment Plan

    2. Assistant Superintendent for district wide and content/curriculum responsibilities

    An Act Relative to Background Checks


    On January 10, 2013, Governor Deval Patrick signed into law H.4307, an act relative to background checks. The new law requires all newly hired employees, beginning in the 2013-2014 school year, to submit to state and national fingerprint-based criminal background checks.

    As a new employee of the Weymouth Public Schools, you will be subject to a Massachusetts criminal background check (CORI). In addition, you will be required to submit to a National Criminal Background Check by fingerprint.

    The fee charged is $55.00 for licensed educators and $35 for all other school personnel.
