PT GOAL Program ELL MCAS Biology/Science Instructor

Job Goal: The GOAL program serves newcomer English Language Learner (ELL) students who are 17-25 years old. In their course of study at SCALE, students attend a core ELL class as well as ELA, Math, and Biology classes. The goal of Biology class is to increase students’ English proficiency while preparing them to pass the Biology MCAS. Emphasis will be on hands-on activities and projects that help students connect with and understand science concepts.

Additionally, the Science Instructor will support students through portfolio-based tasks to complete their Adult Diploma.

Teachers attend GOAL program meetings, set goals with students, and work with program counselors and the program administrator to provide a meaningful educational experience that advances students toward their goals. Teachers are expected to participate in staff development activities throughout the year and collaborate with an in-class volunteer.

Responsibilities:
Prepare lesson plans and appropriate curriculum.
Participate in GOAL meetings and appropriate in-service workshops.
Evaluate student progress and make placement recommendations, including conducting formal student evaluations and student conference three (3) times per year.
Maintain accurate attendance records.
Work effectively with other teachers, counselor(s), and program administrator on student and program issues.
Follow department policy/procedures regarding substitutes and substitute lesson plans.

Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in Education
Experience with English Language Learners
Demonstrated knowledge of a variety of learner-centered teaching approaches
Experience preparing students to pass the Biology MCAS
Experience teaching high school or middle school

Preferred Qualifications:
Massachusetts Teacher Certification (Science preferred)
Experience incorporating technology into instruction/use of Smartboard
Proficiency in one language in addition to English

Physical Demands, Work Environment, Application Requirements:
Job requires some computer use. General office and classroom environment with air conditioning and fluorescent lighting.

Terms of Employment:
Part-time, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2019-2020 School year (Please note that the school year may be extended due to snow days or other cancellations.)

Salary:
Salary is in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.

Since 1974, SCALE has provided classes and support services to more than 1,200 adult learners (16 years and older) annually who need basic reading, writing and math skills, English instruction for non-native speakers, or a high-school credential. SCALE's fully accessible facilities have a computer lab and an on-site GED Test Center. Most classes are free. Fees are charged for orientations, adult evening school, and testing for the GED (General Educational Development) diploma and for the ADP (Adult Diploma Program).
