(2) SFLC Part Time Multilingual Services Interpreter/Translator
Bilingual Portuguese Speakers
SOMERVILLE FAMILY LEARNING COLLABORATIVE (SFLC)

Job Goal: The Community Partnerships & Wraparound Services Unit of the SFLC works to develop and implement strategies to provide and/or connect families with comprehensive wraparound services and engages in authentic, collaborative partnerships with community organizations and city agencies to ensure optimal, comprehensive services for families.

The Multilingual Services Interpreter/Translator provides oral and written translation/interpretation to (target language) speaking parents/guardians in the Somerville Public Schools, including but not limited to the Special Education Department. The Interpreter/Translator must be skilled at recognizing and accommodating dialectic differences in language.

Preferred Qualification:
• Proficient communication in English (listening, speaking, reading, and writing)
• Bilingual/Bicultural highly preferred
• Interpretation certification
• Experience working with diverse communities
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Excellent organizational skills
• Ability to work flexible hours including before school, evenings and weekends
• Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a team
• Computer and internet literacy
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Deep commitment to closing opportunity gaps and promoting equitable practices

Responsibilities:
• Facilitate oral communication between parents/guardians and district staff by interpreting telephone conversations, conference calls, in-person conversations, etc. during school hours, for parent/teacher conferences, IEP meetings, and other school functions
• Translates school-home communications and system-wide documents from English to the target language
• Interprets and translates technical language as related to Special Education and specialized services
• Uses technology in English and the target language appropriately to format, translate, save and retrieve work
• Clarifies content and terminology
• Reviews and evaluates documents
• Edits work of other translators and responds to editing suggestions of other
• Assumes responsibility for quality of translation work submitted by reviewing, editing, and revising own work and quality of interpretation by clarifying ideas and messages to assist with understanding
• Learns new translation technology as appropriate
• Maintains confidentiality and ethical behavior related to sensitive situations
• Commits to providing and promoting equitable practices to ensure access for all families
• Other job-related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor

Terms of Employment:
Work Year: 10 months / Part Time
Salary: $30 per hour / Local Funding Source

Position Reports to: SFLC Liaison Program Coordinator and/or Multilingual Services Coordinator
