2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR


Job Goal: The GOAL Program serves newly-arrived young adults with beginner level English skills. Most students have experienced limited and/or interrupted education in their home countries and meet the criteria for SLIFE. The ELL/SLIFE Level 1 Bilingual Instructor will be primarily responsible for raising the reading and writing levels of small groups of newcomer students between the ages of 18-22 in both English and Spanish. Spanish is the first language of the majority of our students. Students in the GOAL Program are working toward passing MCAS exams and completing the portfolio-based Adult Diploma Program (ADP). To this end, the ELL/SLIFE Instructor is also responsible for embedding Biology and social studies content into their curriculum to provide students with a strong foundation for the ADP. It is essential that the ELL/SLIFE Instructor is fluent in Spanish and has had formal training in and successful experience raising reading and writing levels for this population. The ELL/SLIFE Instructor will work in close collaboration with other teachers, possibly co-teach, and be a resource for the GOAL team.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Master’s Degree (in ELL literacy instruction/bilingual education preferred)
• MA Teacher Certification
• Fluent in Spanish
• Three years of experience teaching ELL/SLIFE Level 1
• Must be a flexible self-starter with a high tolerance for stress and a solutions-oriented mindset
• Experience with computer-based programs and Internet resources
• Basic digital literacy

• Prepare and deliver engaging and relevant lessons with measurable objectives that will result in literacy learning gains
• Evaluate and document student progress
• Complete attendance and assessment–related activities
• Work collaboratively with the program administrator, counselor, and teachers at SCALE and Somerville High School
• Participate in GOAL Team Meetings
• Attend SPS staff development activities related to position
• Follow department policy/procedures regarding substitutes and substitute lesson plans

Physical Demands, Work Environment, Application Requirements:
• Completion of an extensive application packet, including copies of social security card and government issued identification
• Completion of C.O.R.I form
• Completion of the National Fingerprint-based background check in accordance with M.G.L. c. 71, §38G.
• Job requires computer use
• General office and classroom environment with air conditioning and fluorescent lighting

Terms of Employment:
• Part-time; schedule to be determined
• 0.3 FTE (Full Time Equivalent): 15 hours per week

Since 1974, SCALE has provided classes and support services to more than 1,200 adult learners (16 years and older) annually who need basic reading, writing and math skills, English instruction for non-native speakers, or a high-school credential. SCALE's fully accessible facilities have a computer lab and an on-site GED Test Center. Most classes are free. Fees are charged for orientations, adult evening school, and testing for the GED (General Educational Development) diploma and for the ADP (Adult Diploma Program).
