General Description:
Next Wave /Full Circle High School is Somerville’s public, alternative moderate special needs (502.4i) school for grades 6 through 12. It is designed to meet the special academic, social, emotional and behavioral needs of adolescents, ages 12-20, who for many reasons, have experienced historical school failure in the traditional mainstream educational system.

The Teacher/Counselor is responsible for teaching academic classes as well as managing a caseload of about 8 – 10 students with IEP’s, co-leading a counseling group, and planning quarterly elective classes.

Teaching Responsibilities:
• Plan and implement curriculum for high school Biology and middle school science classes
• Develop individualized projects and assignments as needed
• Prepare and administer appropriate assessments and monitor student progress
• Implement appropriate accommodations and modifications for individual students
• Teach 3-4 afternoon elective classes as needed
• Lead Student Government Committee
• Prepare quarterly and end of semester reports
• Assist with proctoring state assessments

Counseling Responsibilities:
• Provide individual support to 8 students
• Co-lead group counseling twice a week (focus on goal setting, academic support, community building, career and college planning and crisis intervention)
• Maintain student records including report cards, IEP’s, 504’s, work study and individual contracts
• Maintain regular correspondence with families and outside agencies
• Attend supervision provided by Clinical Coordinator

Other Responsibilities:
• Manage IEP’s (attend annual meetings and prepare IEP)
• Attend weekly staff meetings after-school and share in responsibilities (chair, minutes)
• Participate and present in case conferences with clinical consultant
• Participate in supervision provided by principal
• Share responsibility for break, lunch and dismissal coverage
• Collaborate with department colleague, order, maintain and develop curriculum
• Help plan and supervise school activities (field trips, parent nights, graduation, etc…)
• Assist in class scheduling and transitions
• Attend professional development workshops and sessions organize by school, Central Administration and the Special Education Development.
• Participate on school based committees as needed (hiring, school council, scholarship, etc.)


Preferred Qualifications:
• Massachusetts DESE license in Core Subject Area and Mild to Moderate Special Needs
grades 5-12
• Understanding of competency/mastery based education and rubric building
• Familiarity of Project Based Learning / Signature Experiences
• Experience with developing accommodations and modifications to make curriculum accessible to students with special needs. Experience with the IEP process
• Experience teaching in alternative school, or therapeutic school settings
• Experience with high school curriculum, instruction and assessment practices
• Familiarity with alternative education, behavior management interventions and supports
• Ability to maintain a safe and healthy environment for students
• Strong organizational and effective communication skills
• Experience working with a team to develop curriculum
