Beyond the Classroom Learning Coordinator

Job Goal: Somerville High School is a recipient of a grant from the Barr Foundation to redesign the educational model at Somerville High School. An integral part of the redesign is the inclusion of out-of-school learning experiences for every Somerville High School student. We are seeking a Beyond the Classroom Learning Coordinator who will support school and community partners in identifying and developing systems to accommodate the tiered out-of-school learning experience model embedded within the redesign plan for the high school.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Experience in career training, workforce development, or related field.
• Familiarity with the context and structures of a large, urban community, preferred.
• Ability to navigate both school systems and work environment systems and ability to bridge communication between the two (e.g. disambiguate jargon).
• Excellent planning, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills.
• Technological facility with databases, Google documents, Excel, Word, etc.
• Experience in a startup environment or in a previous role with a high level of autonomy.
• Master’s degree in Education, Business, or related field preferred.

Expected outcomes include:
• Formal, thoughtful, and targeted partnerships with local businesses, nonprofits, city agencies, higher education institutions, etc.
• Quality monitoring processes for evaluating student experiences and site placements
• Membership on the Steering Team and serve as a liaison to the subcommittees for the Barr Foundation work

Partnership Building
• Arrange and attend meetings with existing and potential community partners to share about the Beyond the Classroom Learning initiative at SHS, and network to establish a listserv of community organizations, businesses, education institutions, etc. interested in being partners in this work.
• Determine, develop, and maintain a portfolio of capacity available in community partners for fieldwork, internships, externships, etc., including review of existing arrangements (e.g. through Career and Technical Education and other existing partnerships)
• Provide ongoing, frequent communication with community partners for purposes of nurturing relationships and quality monitoring.

Systems Building
• Coordinate with appropriate Somerville High School faculty and staff to:
o develop and maintain approval process for credit bearing experiences;
o create and manage a student application and placement system for OSL experiences; and
o set criteria for equitable Beyond the Classroom Learning experiences.
• Develop or identify a system, LMS, or platform for tracking student placements and participation in out-of-school learning experiences.
• Assist in developing and managing implementation of Beyond the Classroom Seminar Curriculum and support, as needed, in relevant trainings for faculty in implementation.

Quality Monitoring
• Participate in site visits to assess program needs and planning strategies for system/process improvement.
• Engage in classroom visits for Beyond the Classroom seminar and Highlander Community time to support integration of Beyond the Classroom experiences in these classes
• Coordinate trainings for community partners related to quality monitoring, as needed.
• Support data collection strategies on student experiences and placements.

Terms of Employment:
• 205-day work year. This position will be initially grant-funded with the intent to become a permanent position
