40 Percussion Specialist
SOMERVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Job Goal:
As Music Educators, it is our mission to inspire and guide every student in active music making through the use of a sequential and creative curriculum that nurtures the human spirit and promotes cultural understanding.

The Somerville Public Schools Music Department is currently seeking a part-time percussion instructor to teach all elements of percussion (snare, bass, mallet, hand-drums) and direct student ensembles in grades five through eight. The position encompasses instruction at three elementary schools.

The instructor is tasked with inspiring, exposing and guiding students to fully participate in active music making through instrumental music. The qualified candidate will be tasked with preparing students and partnering with faculty, administration and community members in providing a vibrant and rigorous atmosphere where all students can be musically literate and expressive. The instructor will be a motivating force in his/her student’s lives and teach social and emotional elements through the instruction, assessment and performance of music.

Responsibilities:
• Planning, implementation, and assessment of instruction (aligned to Somerville’s Learning Objectives and Curriculum) for percussion students in grades five through eight.
• Recruitment and retention of students
• Procurement, distribution and maintenance of instruments
• Publicity and promotion of public performances
• Student motivation, conduct and discipline
• Maintaining alumni relationships
• Coordination of events and learning opportunities with partners including “School of Honk” the annual “Honkfest” and El Sistema Somerville
• Coordination, communication and collaboration with music department colleagues
• Complies with and supports all District regulations and policies
• Develops a Band-Parent middle school booster organization
• Contributes to building newsletters
• Communicates quarterly with percussion parents via a newsletter

Qualifications:
• Bachelors or higher level degree in Music Education
• MA DESE Certification in Music Education K-12
• Strong communication skills, both oral and written
• Exemplary interpersonal communications skills that establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents and members of the community
• Experience in directing traditional percussion ensembles and world percussion ensembles
• Thorough intermediate to advanced knowledge of band/percussion instruments and pedagogy associated with effective instruction
• Proficiency in multi-cultural music genres and traditional genres
• Experience with the maintenance and repair of percussion instruments
• Commitment to changing lives through music education

• K-12 Supervisor of Music
