POSITION: Elementary Social Studies Coach

JOB GOAL: Improve student achievement and learning by providing leadership to staff in their classroom practices in elementary social studies instruction, curriculum and assessment.

• Massachusetts Licensure in Elementary (1-6), History, Social Science or Humanities
• Three or more years of successful classroom teaching experience
• Deep knowledge of revised 2018 MA History & Social Studies frameworks, specifically new state initiatives on civic education.
• Familiarity with elementary Common Core and ELA literacy standards.
• Content and pedagogical knowledge of elementary social studies
• Experience differentiating social studies instruction
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with teachers
• Experience providing professional development to elementary teachers
• Experience communicating with parents/guardians
• Experience with standards based assessment and effective use of student data
• Ability to analyze data and a familiarity with spreadsheets
• Administer, score and interpret diagnostic instruments
• Ability to co-plan and co-teach lessons with classroom teachers consistent with district-wide initiative

• Work with classroom teachers to improve teaching and learning, through classroom demonstrations, co-teaching, lesson study and mentoring.
• Develop common social studies assessments and rubrics as well as engage teachers in the analysis of data from a variety of sources to inform and improve instruction.
• Assist teachers as they evaluate students’ strengths and weaknesses and identify appropriate classroom interventions strategies and techniques.
• Assist in the development of the district/school professional development programs, including delivering and facilitating social studies workshops and programs as well as job-embedded activities.
• Assist in evaluating social studies materials for teacher and student use.
• Developing scope and sequences for social studies units (in collaboration with teachers) which identify essential questions, historical thinking skills, opportunities for differentiated instruction and synthesize teacher/student materials from a variety of sources. Working with elementary literacy coaches to coordinate social studies skills with key reading/writing district initiatives.
• Work collaboratively and participate in district-wide discussions with the K-12 Social Studies Director and other curriculum leaders.
• Participate in the review and revision of the district’s social studies curriculum with a specific focus on increasing diverse narratives within the curriculum as well as culturally responsive content and teaching practices
• Perform additional responsibilities as deemed appropriate by school and district supervisors

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Arlington Education Association Bargaining Unit Position, School Year plus up to 10 additional days if necessary at per diem rate.

REPORTS TO: K-12 Social Studies Director (primary) and building principals (secondary). The Social Studies Coach position is a district position with specific building assignments.

SALARY: Per the Arlington Education Association Contract

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated as per the Arlington Education Association Contract. Evaluations will be completed by the K-12 Social Studies Director with input from the building principals.

Job Requirements
All employees must have a criminal background check - CORI and Fingerprinting - prior to beginning work.

The first contractual work day in the 2019-2020 school year is August 28, 2019. However, new educators to the District attend several days of training and orientation during the weeks of August 19 and 26.
