Spring/Summer Position

Job Goal: The Somerville Public Schools is building upon a model orientation program that includes targeted academic support and enrichment programs and activities for orienting new Somerville High School students to the building, the culture of academic rigor, and the resources available to support every student in maximizing their potential. Teachers are sought to teach the summer program for a maximum of 3 weeks. A total of 4 teachers are sought to deliver the summer program curriculum. The program combines (a) orientation to the academic expectations in ELA, Math and Science (STEM) (b) study skills and habits necessary to being a successful high school student, and (c) introduction to the comprehensive guidance program at Somerville High.

A Project Coordinator is sought to (a) direct the summer program planning, (b) manage student recruitment for the summer program, (c) prepare and oversee the daily operations of the summer program, including coordinate with Food Services for meals, and (d) compile, write and submit the required student data for SPS director of Summer Programs.

Responsibilities:
Planning/Preparation:
1. Facilitate all aspects of program planning and outreach including updating curriculum materials /student assignment/teacher meeting schedule
2. Work with the Human Resources/Diversity Administrator to ensure summer teaching staff is in place, preferably by late May 2019.
3. Identify high-risk 8th grade students and oversee outreach for students’ participation in the program.
4. Prepare and deliver recruitment materials to staff, students and families who work with Grade 8 students in all elementary schools.
5. Communicate with each 8th grade counselor to encourage program enrollment
6. Write and submit final reports as required.

Program Coordination:
1. Collect and report daily attendance and other student data.
2. Promote student attendance utilizing various available communications tools and resources.
3. Implement formative evaluation plan and oversee collection of data from students.
4. Plan and facilitate staff meetings to review student feedback and other formative data.
5. Coordinate and supervise appropriate educational field trips for students.
6. Work with Finance Office to administer program budget, including purchasing of supplies and materials.
7. Work with High School Headmaster to ensure safety and appropriate use of facility by students and faculty.
8. Work with Director of Student Services to coordinate student support and discipline.
9. Oversee the development of final data collection and other reporting to the SPS Director of Summer Programs
10. Other duties as assigned.

Teaching:
1. Plan and facilitate morning and afternoon group activities.
2. Assist with implementation of the Guidance curriculum once a week, including chaperoning field trips.

Terms of Employment:
• Start Date: July 8, 2019 End Date: July 26, 2019
• Monday – Thursday schedule
• Approximately 30 hours of planning, professional development and outreach work in the spring (before the start of the program).
• Approximately 63 hours of supervising all aspects of the program during program days.
• Approximately 30 hours of program coordination, staff and partner management, and documentation work in the summer.
Rate of Pay: Up to $3321
• $810 for Spring management/coordination/recruitment work (est. 30 hours)
• $810 for Summer program management/coordination/grant reporting work (est. 50 hours)
• Up to $1701 for summer teaching, planning and professional collaborative time over a three-week period (est. 63 hours) at the rate of $27/hour.
Position Reports to: Headmaster of Somerville High School

Location: All work will take place at Somerville High School at 81 Highland Avenue, Somerville
