2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR

Part-Time ABE Education Reading/Writing 4 Teacher
Somerville Center for Adult Learning Experiences (SCALE)

Job Goal:
The Reading/Writing 4 Teacher will be primarily responsible for raising the reading and writing levels of a class of approximately 20 adult students. Students range in age and previous education; English is the second language for the majority of our students. Most students are working towards earning a high school equivalency credential. To this end, the RW teacher is also responsible for teaching a range of science and social studies topics. Although experience teaching literacy in the content areas is preferred, it is essential that the RW teacher has had training in and successful experience teaching explicit reading and writing skills/strategies. The RW teacher will work with the Program Administrator to plan curriculum. The instructor must keep attendance records, document student progress, and assist with other DESE-related activities.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Advanced Degree preferred in related field
• Must be a licensed teacher by MA DESE. (literacy instruction preferred)
• Two years of experience teaching literacy
• Experience with computer-based programs and Internet resources
• Basic digital literacy

• Prepare and maintain written lesson plans that are aligned to the College and Career Readiness Standards
• Participate in department meetings (monthly)
• Attend staff development activities related to position
• Evaluate student progress and make placement recommendations
• Complete DESE attendance and assessment–related activities
• Work collaboratively with the ABE program administrator and ABE counselor on student and program issues
• Follow department policy/procedures regarding substitutes and substitute lesson plans

• Part-time: Mornings (Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.)
• Part Time position - Up to 11 hours including 2 prep time.
• Monthly staff meetings at times to be determined

Physical Demands, Work Environment, Application Requirements:
• Completion of an extensive application packet, including copies of social security card and government issued identification
• Completion of C.O.R.I form
• Completion of the National Fingerprint-based background check in accordance with M.G.L. c. 71, §38G.
• Job requires computer use
• General office and classroom environment with air conditioning and fluorescent lighting

Salary is dependent on education level and experience in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.

Since 1974, SCALE has provided classes and support services to more than 1,200 adult learners (16 years and older) annually who need basic reading, writing and math skills, English instruction for non-native speakers, or a high-school credential. SCALE's fully accessible facilities have a computer lab and an on-site GED Test Center. Most classes are free. Fees are charged for orientations, adult evening school, and testing for the GED (General Educational Development) diploma and for the ADP (Adult Diploma Program).
