2018-2019 SCHOOL YEAR

Assistant Director of Special Education
SOMERVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Job Goal: The Assistant Director of Special Education, under the direct supervision of the Director of Special Education, will assist in providing high quality programming. The Assistant Director of Special Education plans and provides staff training and professional development based on research based instruction and best practice; assures alignment with all DESE and district regulations and policies.

Requirements:
MA DESE License as Administrator of Special Education
MA DESE License as a Teacher that supports students with disabilities

Responsibilities:
Educational guidance regarding best practice and research based interventions and services including instructional practices, assessment, behavioral supports, consultation, and methodology.
Consultation and assistance to school district personnel with regards to monitoring and achievement of all students enrolled in general education, vocational, special education, ELL programs, alternative education settings, and out of district placements.
Leadership and collaboration with Special Education Leadership team including direct supervision and evaluation.
Collaborates with Special Education Director, district wide leaders, School Principals, and Vice Principals in the supervision and evaluation of special education staff.
Collaborates with the Director of Special Education to develop, revise and implement systems, policies, practices and procedures for the special education programs to assure best practice
Perform as an instructional and behavioral leader that coaches and develops staff to employ research based, best practice interventions and strategies.
Provides on-going professional development and continued support including follow through for both special education and general education personnel.
Develops instructional practices aligned with research based best practice and prepares curriculum guidance documents and leadership.
Create, manage and supervise programs and staff development activities designed to maximize the skills of diverse learners in the least restrictive environment
Lead staff in preparing and creating inclusive environments for all students
Work with schools and other district leaders to assure coordinated approach, practice and placement.
Collaborate with all stakeholders in transition planning between levels, and for students entering and returning from out of district placements.
Carry out and supervise record keeping required for state and federal reports and audits
Provide direct support to staff and assure fidelity regarding targeted interventions, data gathering, and/or modeling of effective practices.
Collect and analyze student-level and program data and provide data analysis and recommendations to all stakeholders.
Remain current in the field of special education and best practice.
Recognizes, reports and problem solves critical incidents and situations as the arise.
Participate in collaborative activities and functions that foster positive external relationships with parents, the community, and outside agencies.
Interpret and implement federal, state, and local laws, regulations and procedures provide guidance and support to school administrators and direction to staff regarding the implementation of federal and state regulations; ensures accountability for compliance with federal and state laws and regulations.
Strong ability to work collaborative and lead teams in a supportive and reflective manner
Oversee implementation and development of Special Education summer school program and services
Assume active leadership role with regards to Proportionate Share and Circuit Breaker
Assume active leadership role with mediations, BSEA hearings, and any other state or federal based agency or resolution process
Commitment to equity and equitable practices including but not limited to meeting the diverse needs of all students with consideration for proportionality in referral, eligibility, and placement trends
Perform all other reasonably related duties, as requested.
Participation at evening meetings may be required at times.

Qualifications:
Minimum of a Master’s Degree
Evidence of five (5) years of successful teaching or administrative experience
MA DESE License as Administrator of Special Education
MA DESE License as a Teacher that supports students with disabilities
Superior oral and written communication skills
Strong organization skills
Strong computer skills

Preferred Qualifications:
Extensive experience working with special needs students and a current, in-depth knowledge of special education practice, regulations and thinking
Demonstrated ability to mediate difficult issues with tact, diplomacy and empathy
Experience in managing Special Education evaluations
Must be able to collect analyze, report, disseminate and manage data
