2019 CALCULUS PROJECT SUMMER PROGRAM

Anticipated Calculus Project Assistant Teachers
EAST SOMERVILLE COMMUNITY SCHOOL

Job Goal: The Somerville Calculus Project aims to increase the number of Black, Latina/o (students with family from South or Central America), and income-qualifying students in high-level math courses and launch them on a trajectory towards success in calculus by their senior year of high school.

The summer component of the Calculus Project offers cohorts of students 3 weeks of rigorous, engaging, and fun math activities and instruction coupled with a focus on growth mindset and exploring the work of local and historical STEM professionals of color. The program centers on "pre-teaching" math content students will encounter in the fall. Participation in the program is free for students, including breakfast and lunch during the summer.

The Assistant Teacher assists the teacher with instruction and lesson planning. The ideal candidate is an aspiring teacher who seeks to earn practicum hours.

The program will run five hours each day with an optional after school component.

Assistant Teaching Positions:
• Pre-Algebra Assistant Teacher
• Algebra Assistant Teacher
• Geometry Assistant Teacher
• Algebra 2 Assistant Teacher

Responsibilities:
• Instruct students in math content area and prepare them for mathematics work the next school year in the rare case that the teacher cannot do so
• Encourage and support students’ self-management in the classroom and school building
• Communicate effectively with parents as needed
• Facilitate personalized learning, using an online learning platform
• Monitor and support students’ academic growth on a math platform
• Work with individual or small groups of students as needed to ensure understanding of the content
• Attend all Professional Development sessions prior to the program
• Collaborate with and empower Somerville High School Peer Mentors

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in the classroom as a paraprofessional or teacher
• Ability to maintain an engaging safe, and healthy environment for students
• Ability to communicate with students and families who are potentially from culturally and/or linguistically different backgrounds
• Willingness to implement TCP Pride Curriculum, which teaches students about the historical accomplishments of STEM professionals of color, and lets them meet successful STEM professionals of color

Terms of Employment:
• Monday – Friday, 9:00am – 2:00pm
• Start Date: July 8, 2019
• End Date: July 26, 2019

• Stipend: $1,875

Position Reports to: Assistant Superintendent or designee
