AFTER SCHOOL HOMEWORK TEACHER
El Sistema Inspired After School Program
East Somerville Community School

Job Goal
The After School Homework Teacher will assist with homework assigned by a student’s classroom teacher and connect instruction to the classroom curriculum. Additionally, he or she will generate activities that provide academic enrichment and skill building but which are not directly associated with classroom requirements.

El Sistema Somerville is in partnership with the Somerville Public Schools Music Department and supported by the City of Somerville, grants, individual and corporate donors. The goal of the program is to provide exceptional instrumental and orchestral education in order to promote character development, positive citizenship and increased academic achievement.

Responsibilities:
• Monitor homework assignments for progress and completion
• Work one-on-one with students and work in small groups, circulating between student homework tables
• Assist students in developing organizational skills
• Apply consistent teaching methods and strategies that connect student learning with the Somerville Public School curriculum
• Model literacy and good study skills
• Assist students in test preparation

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in education or related field preferred
• Desire to work with school-age students (grades 3 through 8)
• Effective oral and written communication skills
• Knowledge of basic math, reading, science, language and grammar skills
• Attention to detail and precision in work habits
• Good intrapersonal skills and ability to work as a team
• Written and spoken Spanish language skills a plus

Terms of Employment:
Up to 10 hours per week / Up to 4 teaching days per week (minimal teaching 2 days)
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday
3:00–5:20PM each day; two blocks of homework help

Position Reports to: Director of El Sistema or designee
