Job Description

1. Report’s to the Superintendent of Schools

2. Coordinate activities relating to special education including but not limited to:
-Attending all Planning and Placement Team (PPT) meetings as needed
-Consulting on PPT meetings as needed
-Participating offsite PPT’s
-Following up on all documentation and/or action recommended by PPT
e.g. arranging for consultants, outside evaluators, IEPs on file, etc.
-Maintaining compliance with all state and federal laws and guidelines
-Consult with staff for all aspects of special education, holding regular monthly meetings
-Complete and submit all state and federal reports required
-Coordinate all program compliance issues
-Recommend appropriate changes to BOE policy and procedures (as per CSDE)
-Directly supervises Special Education staff
-Budget preparation and ordering/check in for special services personnel and office
-Budget preparation and ordering/check in for all special education teachers
-Financial matters and accountability for special education
-Maintain current Birth to Three lists
-Consult with principals regarding special education staff, students and budget
-Assist schools with developing paraprofessional schedules per students’ IEP recommendations
-Coordinate referrals of preschool age children
-Other activities relating to special education as needed

3. Permanent member of professional evaluation committee

4. District Grants Coordinator for federal entitlements
Write district grants for Consolidated Grant (Title IV) and IDEA
Monitor (with principals and business manager) appropriate spending of funds
Request names of Thompson residents of school age enrolled in non-public schools

5. Custodian of Student Records
Assure appropriate record keeping in all schools
Inform staff of confidentiality requirements
Maintain appropriate IEP & 504 documents

6. District contact for Paraprofessionals

7. Coordinator for Home Bound Tutoring (shared with principals & superintendent)

8. Home Schooling Enumeration including maintaining accurate list of school age home schooled children, sending letters annually to parents, following up on students who are not registered

9. Attend state meetings with school representatives
Ensure all materials received and returned
Provide technical assistance to schools

10. Work with bus coordinator/outside contractors for special transportation

11. Contact for DCF (district-wide)

12. Conduct workshops, informational meetings, with staff, BOE or other interested parties as needed
or required by CSDE

13. Coordinate other activities with administrators, superintendent, and other staff as needed as related to the above job responsibilities.

14. Manage Medicaid reporting for reimbursements.

15. Evaluate Special Education Personnel in collaboration with School Principal.

16. Other duties assigned by the Superintendent of Schools.

17. Develop Special Education Parent Advisory Group.

Job Requirements
1. Appropriate CT Certification 092 and 165
2. Masters’ degree from approved institution
3. 18 credits in more beyond Masters’
4. Demonstrated experience as supervisor of special education programs
5. 5 years or more of classroom experience as a special education teacher
