Job Description
RI Certification as Elementary/Middle Special Education Teacher, Grades K-8
• Experience working with students with social/emotional and behavioral challenges
• Knowledge and skills necessary to assist individuals, groups and systems through the application of positive behavior supports
• Experience developing and implementing Individualized Educational Programs, Functional Assessments of Behavior and Behavior Intervention Plans
• CPI training and certification

Reports to: Building Principal and Director of Pupil Personnel

Job Goal:

Provided special education to identified students in order to support their social/emotional and academic learning.

The Special Educator works directly with identified students to teach behaviors and executive functioning skills that increase academic performance within the general classroom and/or provides academic instruction in an alternate location. The Special Educator will provide diversified strategies and activities specifically designed for targeted students.

Performance Responsibilities:

• Define and measure student behavior; understanding principles of reinforcement; teaching new behavior; implementing strategies for weakening behavior; and identifying antecedents

• Participate in team meetings with the identified student’s teachers and parents for the purpose of completing a Functional Behavioral Assessment

• Participate in team meetings in order to design Behavior Intervention plans

• Participate in team meetings in order to develop IEPs

• Provide special education to identified students that supports their growth in academics, positive behavior and social/emotional learning that is explicit, intensive, accelerated and provides ample practice in an identified alternate location to ensure a safe, non-threatening, nurturing environment

• Identify daily and/or weekly goals for students to teach students self-reflection strategies to monitor their own progress

• Progress monitor students for academics, behavior and social/emotional learning

• Maintain strong home/school communication with identified students families that empowers parents by providing them with skills and techniques to support the positive behavior development of their child

• Manage the "Check In/Check Out" system for identified students daily

• Review behavior referrals and SWIS data reports at the school, classroom and individual level

• Other duties as assigned by Building Principal and Director of Pupil Personnel
