The Burrillville school Department is seeing certified, qualified candidates to fill a long term guidance counselor substitute position. Certified staff work from 7:30 am to 2:15 pm daily. Please read the following job description for responsibilities and qualifications:

Position Description

Title: Guidance Counselor (6 - 8)

Supervisor(s): Middle School Principal
Director of Pupil Personnel Services

Department: School Department


The Guidance Counselor, as a member of the Guidance Department staff, will provide a comprehensive guidance and counseling program for students in grades 6 – 8 and, specifically, provide services to meet the special needs of his/her assigned caseload.

In this capacity, he/she will consult with teachers, parents, and staff to enhance their personal effectiveness in promoting student educational, social, personal, and career development.

The Guidance Counselor will also provide support to the middle school program.


1. Implements a developmental guidance program through classroom and group activities;

2. Participates collaboratively in weekly meetings, i.e., Principal’s meetings, M.D.T. meetings, I.E.P. meetings, S.S.T. meetings, C.S.T. meetings, Team meetings;

3. Implements responsive services to meet the needs of students, including academic counseling, consultation, referral, or information;

4. Counsels students with problems related to substance abuse, medical afflictions, depression, child abuse, and dysfunctional families;

5. Promotes good staff and community relations, consults with teachers and support staff, participates in community outreach activities and information dissemination, etc.;

6. Provides support for the administration of assessments, including the Rhode Island State Assessment Program and the Metropolitan Achievement tests;

7. Participates in activities related to student registration, attendance, and scheduling;

8. Provides support for grading and reporting, including monitoring student performance and maintenance of records;

9. Provides timely notification of parents regarding low grades and potential retention;

10. Implements career activities, to include career awareness and a Career Fair.

11. Implements individual planning activities, to include an academic plan of personal development.

12. Participates in professional development;

13. Provides support for Summer School programming, registration, and record-keeping;

14. Completes reports at the request of the administration.

15. Collaborates with elementary and high school personnel towards the smooth transition of students.

16. Provides other services at the request of the school administration.


1. A Master’s Degree in Guidance & Counseling.

2. Certification as a Guidance Counselor.

3. Successful teaching experience with secondary school age groups.

4. Conceptual, interpersonal, and social skills necessary for position performance.

5. Demonstrated commitment to the implementation of high standards for all students.

6. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with staff.

7. Demonstrated understanding of diverse instructional and counseling strategies.

8. Demonstrated ability to interact successfully with parents in the support of students.

9. Demonstrated commitment to continuous professional development to ensure that knowledge and skills remain current.
