Job Description
Substitute nurses needed on an as-needed, as-called basis.

SUMMARY
The school nurse is responsible for addressing the immediate health needs of students and providing onsite care. The school nurse will support learning through improved attendance levels and assist students who may have health and behavioral risks.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Manage a comprehensive and coordinated health service program for students within the school setting.

Implement mandated health screenings.

Manage the school’s medication program.

Assess children for a wide range of physical and behavioral illnesses.

Implement disease management education for children with illnesses such as diabetes and asthma. Process may involve children’s families.

Prevent spread of communicable diseases.

Provide emergency care.

Coordinate health service and education efforts with teachers, administrators, athletic directors, health educators, food service personnel, etc.

Collaborate with parents, community health care providers and agencies.

Maintain comprehensive and cumulative health records for students.

Write on-the-job injury reports for staff members and forward reports to Central Office for processing.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university. Minimum of two years of experience in pediatrics, community he

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from students, parents and staff.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts.

TECHNOLOGY SKILLS
Ability to run District software programs.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid licensure from Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to work as a School Nurse.
Current license as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts.
Current CPR certification.
