The Burrillville School Department is seeking certified and qualified candidates for School Nurse Teacher substitutes. Grade levels in the Burrillville School District range from Pre-K through Grade 12 in 5 different schools. Please read the following job description for qualifications and responsibilities.

Position Description

Title: School Nurse/Teacher

Supervisor: Building Principal; Director of Pupil Personnel Services

Department: School Department

The certified School Nurse/Teacher shall provide population-based Health services to school children in public and non-public schools in the community.

1. Provides service for emergencies demanding immediate attention such as the following:

• Major injuries/severe burns
• Unconsciousness or disorientation
• Active severe bleeding
• Significant shortness of breath
• Severe pain (head, neck, chest, abdomen, and extremities
• Sudden loss of function including loss of vision, hearing, touch, or strength
• Anaphylaxis

2. Implements school health policies and procedures as described in the Burrillville School Department Health Services Manual.

3. Implements Physician’s orders, including orders for medication.

4. Distributes and supports staff implementation of district Guidelines for common issues and injuries.

5. Coordinates a response, including reporting, to health emergencies, such as those requiring immunizations.

6. Conducts screenings (e.g., vision, hearing, dental, scoliosis, etc.) and contacts parents with referrals as needed.

7. Arranges for state-required immunizations for students who have no health-care provider.

8. Maintains a medical recordkeeping system that conforms with state regulations.

9. Provides direct classroom Health instruction according to the Burrillville School Department Health Curriculum.

10. Provides staff training, as necessary (e.g.: blood-borne pathogens, HIV, etc..)

11. Trains and shares supervision of support staff assistant.

12. Provides other services as requested by the Administration.


1. The School Nurse/Teacher shall be certified by the Rhode Island State Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and/or licensed as a registered Nurse.

2. The School Nurse/Teacher shall be qualified by virtue of training and experience to provide school health services and supervision of staff implementation of First Aid and CPR.

3. The School Nurse/Teacher shall have knowledge of all state and local laws, regulations, and protocols affecting schools.

The School Department is a community of approximately 2,550 students, 235 faculty members, 87 staff, and 15 administrators, including the Superintendent of Schools. The School Department is overseen by the Burrillville School Committee, seven representative individuals elected on a rotating basis every four years by the citizens of the town.
